Default Piano removals

Hi folks

I need to move a baby grand piano from Kiddiminster to Plymouth. Anyone had to use a piano removal service before?
Any recommendations or contacts would be greatfully recived.

Cheapest quote I have had is just over £300.

Thank you.

I'll turn up at wherever and remove it for free, if you want

I'm of no use, but what is the big problem with moving them? Does it require a special process?

Sure you could rack together a few heavies and get it done?

These guys used to operate across the road from me until they moved. Very nice people. Having said that, I have no idea of costs but I'll wager that most of the cost is due top the distance - a short local move used to be in the order of £50...you'll be paying for two chaps and a van. The only specialist equipment they have is the 'dolly' - the thing with with wheels....

I think the biggest problem is the weight mate, they are stupidly heavy! You'd never just sling one in the back of a van, think you need a trolley and tail lift and stuff. I'm not an expert mind!

We never used a tail lift to get them in the van.
The most complicated bit is not lifting the piano, its knowing how to lift it. Think narrow hallways/corners and the angles you have to lift it at. It's not rocket science, but if you just get two heavies to do it, it'll likely end in tears.

Some friends of mine had a baby grand moved, but they had it kept in storage for a while too, so the costs aren't relevant. They used a local firm in Leamington Spa. I seem to recall the cost was something like 100 for moving it, then plus a mileage rate (2 chaps, luton type van).

As SeanC says, it's knowing how to shift them, I watched them do it and like most things, the professionals made it look easy but I certainly wouldn't trust it to non-pro's. That piano weighed around 250kg, drop it and it'll be wrecked.

For that distance I wouldn't have thought 300 to be wildly out.
