Default Fuel Tap Repair Kit - where from?

Hi

I have this strong smell of fuel around the left tank area of the bike ( 2000 sv 650 s) when its been ridden just before switch off. i know the fuel tap has a leak so wondering if this could be the cause or could it be something else.

Also I had a look at wemoto for a fuel tap repair kit, are there any other places that supply these.

Many thanks.

hi im new to this forum and im new to sv 650's - its my first big bike - I saw the bike on Gumtree and sent my hubby and his mate to buy it so from Blackpool to Falkirk, Scotland they went - they brought her back[ I don't think my hubby dared return without her!!]. Last Sunday we went to Southport with our bike club......but the next day we noticed a lot of petrol on the floor in the garage..........anyway to cut a long story short - my hubby has taken off the petrol tap and after following a past 'chat' on here and you tube is tackling the problem.....hopefully I will be able to give you all an update when shes all put back together - anyway Hello from sunny/rainy Blackpool.....x

Hmm well here is my update - it seemed like he had fixed the problem but it seems that he hasn't. I went to work on the bike and when I was ready to go home it wouldn't start - my hubby picked me up and he took the exhaust pipe off and it was full or petrol, does anybody have any advice on this and what it could be please, and what we could do to fix it, anyway he jumped started it just to get it home, and when it did fire up a load of petrol sprayed out of it, a friend of ours has said it might need 'rejetting?' but how can I be sure? - please please can anyone give me any advice, anything - I just want to ride my bike and im sad I cant ..............x

I doubt it needs rejetting, it sounds like a carb problem, maybe the float is sticky because its gummed up and the cylinder is full of fuel, which is then getting blown into the exhaust when you're trying to start it.

It won't start because it's flooded with fuel.

If it had been sitting around for a long time, then the fuel could have gone off, causing the carbs to gum up.

But the fuel shouldn't flow if the engine isn't running, as the tap is vacuum operated, and I think Dirty Dog had a problem with his fuel tap, as a rubber diaphragm had gone inside the fuel tap, did your hubby stip the tap down?

Others will come along with their theories, which might be better than mine.

so have you changed the diaphragm/spring in the tap ? they are to two bits that shut off fuel when the engine isn't running.

as you'll see in the link, a new diaphragm and spring is provided in the rebuild kit, it's worth checking the vacuum tube that goes into the tape whilst you're there, sounds like you tap isn't sealing when you turn the engine off, so fuel is trickling into the cylinder (making it harder to start) and onto the exhaust (where you've found excess fuel), jetting is unlikely to be the cause as I presume it idles fine once started and runs OK ?

Cheers Mark.

I'd suggest a few more things before spending money at a garage, it is possible the inside of the tap gets a buildup on it and needs a clean to make a good seal (even with new diaphragm and spring), a simple test is to remove the tap from the tank, blow up the pipe that would go to the carbs (so effectively backwards), it should be sealed, then to confirm suck the tube coming off the back and fold it over (sealling it) and now repeating the previous test blow once again up the carb feed pipe and it should now be clear, if this works, then the tap is working properly, to finally confirm, attach the tap back onto the tank and disconnect the pipe you were blowing up, add some fuel and leaving the pipe off place some newspaper under it, this will show any fuel leak.

Cheers Mark.
