Default Pipex - bad service

Anyone here using Pipex as their ISP

Since January I've had really bad service from them - my router connects to the local exchange (light steady on the front), but nothing happens. This has been happening for days at a time, then it'll fix itself, for an hour or so, before going down again. My father who is also with Pipex, but lives in Sussex has had identical problems.

On Tuesday it went down when I was working at home, but I was able to use next doors broadband (Plusnet) with no problem.

I've tried 2 different routers, both with no luck

Any ideas

I'm thinking of changing my ISP as this is beyond a joke

Well I'm having so many problems with NTL over the last three weeks that I'm honestly considering going over to BT (which just shows how desperate I am ).

Have you used the built in router tools to check the SNR & ATT on your line? Also its well known that DECT phones can cause the line to drop. There are several causes.

I have had problems in the past where the line would get very noisy with data noise, in the end it was traced back to a faulty ADSL Filter in the exchange and had to be fixed, but unless a tech comes to site and confirms its not your equipment you are stuffed. But Zen was very helpfull.

Zen have to be one of the best ISPs in the market at the moment for support.

We had loads of problems... but in the end Jax managed to get 6 months free service out of them for our troubles... very persuasive is Jax.
Broadbands been great though, had it for 4-5 years now with no problems.

Never had any problems with Pipex in well over a year, everyone I know with pipex (about 12 people) doesn't have any issues...

Are you sure its not just the bt line ?

on a tangent... Everyone I know who's used ntl has dropped it cos its crap

Si, your symptoms sound very much like a dodgy line card in the Exchange. Now, as Pipex do not have any of their own LLU services, I would expect that your DSL is actually provided by BT, but there is a posibility that it's a Bulldog circuit (but I doubt it).

If your next door neighbour is fine, then it is not the Exchange or DSLAM, but could be something that is particular to that specific circuit. I put my own router on this weekend after my firewall died on me, so I now have a back up router if necessary.

So, you have a spare router, so it's not that, ask your neighbour if you can try his filter (I have business grade ADSL so the filter is actually in the termination on the wall) but you should have a filter in the phone socket. If it's not that, then I would suggest it's the line card or filter at the exchange, which is down to Pipex/BT to sort.

I'm with Pipex and have been for a few years. Overall they have been pretty good but recently it just keeps dropping the connection. The router has one light on (as it should be) but the other one just flashes for a bit and then goes back to normal.

Saying that, it hasn't been much of a problem for the last few days.

I found ringing them is better than email, once you get past the really irritating messages you have to listen to when waiting for an available operative. I only ever ring when I have problems connecting to the internet, therefore I really am not impressed when I have to listen to a voice telling me to go to www.pipex.co.uk for further information. Just to clarify, this is after I have already pressed all the buttons to get through to the department that deal with connection issues.

And breath....rant over.

They have the prices to match too

I was with Pipex (who were excellent at the time,) I then jumped ship to 'Hi Velocity' because I could get more speed for less money - let me warn people, DON'T DO IT! 'Hi Velocity' are re-sellers and as such, don't have to give you a MAC code if you want to switch ISP's It took them 8 weeks to provide me with one (& they only did that because I kept ringing them on a daily basis )

I am now with Force9; who are part of Supanet... So far, so good
