Default Engine life span and EFI injector size?

A coworker has offered to sell me an '01 SV650 engine for what I think is a decent price, but the 50,000 miles(81,000)km has me concerned. Which parts are likely to be in the worst shape after this many miles? Will it need a major overhaul like rod replacement or will pistons and valvetrain be the extent of it? I can do most of the work myself, but I don't want to buy it if it needs $500 worth put in in addition to the cost of buying it. I do not know how or if it was maintained, but it does start and run.

Second, what is the stock injector flow rate for the EFI engines? Probably ~150 to 200cc/min, right?

Also just a hello to everyone since I'm new here. I don't have an SV yet, but I'm no stranger to bikes. I currently have a '95 Honda XR600 and have owned a 250L and CR250 prior. Now I am looking to get a v-twin sportbike so I can ride(legally) on the street. The other option I had in mind is a Honda Hawk 647, but those are getting old now and aren't that common anymore.

An engine that old is worth pretty much nothing - less than $100 anyway. If it has been regularly serviced on time the rods/pistons/cams should be okay. The exhaust valves are probably pitted and may need to go. If it has been looked after not so well then pretty much everything will be in very bad shape.

Hmm, why do you want to know? - are you going to turbo it?

I haven't ruled that out . I have a Garrett GT15 that would probably do pretty well on it. The GT15 is on a fuel injected Briggs & Stratton at the moment, however. I also have an IHI from a 1.8L Subaru and some other misc. turbos in my collection.

I was thinking of getting it more as a play engine to put in an older bike frame. The guy wants $200, but I don't want to mess with it if it barely runs, knocks, etc and is a general piece of junk. It doesn't have carburetors or anything, just the complete engine.

Alright, I'm not so worried about the rods now that I see they have bolt-on caps. I had it in my head that the SVs used a press-together crank. I downloaded the online manual and am now relieved to see that they are the standard automotive type . It's not easy to find shops around here that can properly rebuild a press-fit crank and besides, the more work I can do myself the better.

The SV is a good honest engine - and doesn't contain anything annoying or unusual. Adding a turbo isn't something that I've ruled out either - it would best to have it sit after the two header pipes join, with an oil feed from an oil filter adapter. Probably need an electric oil return pump. The ducting to the airbox wouldn't be completely hidden, but could be made acceptable. Let us all know how you go!

Will do. I'd have to do something about that 11.5:1 compression if a turbo was going to happen.

Any idea what the injector size is on the '03+ 650?

11.5 isn't that high, and the SV doesn't run its ignition advance as high as it could. Mild boost pressures should be okay.

I had a look today, and couldn't see the part number on the injectors. Somebody around here will know...

That may be, but what fun is "mild" boost? Fortunately bikes don't eat gas too badly and one could probably afford to run it on 100.

The one I have here is out of an '05 and says 2500YJ on the side.

The SV crank is not the strongest crank ever, might be worth mentioning at this point...

Is it because there are two cylinders swinging the journals between only two main bearings? Is there a known limit, or do they just fail once in a while?
