When I got my SV two weeks ago it had just turned two years old and had 4k on the clock, so it needs it's first proper service.
I'm going to do it myself and I figure that it's best to combine the 4k & 24month items. So my shopping list is as follows: Engine Oil Engine Oil Filter Engine antifreeze\coolant (suitable for aluminium radiator) Distilled water (1l) Brake Fluid - Glycol based (Not Silicone or Petroleum based) Spark Plugs - (NGK CR8E or DENSO U24ESR-N) M&P do a service pack for £30 which includes Silkolene Oil, a filter and appropriate plugs. Bit worried the filter isn't OEM but figure it'll prolly be ok. I'm more stuck on the Brake Fluid and Antifreeze. I figure it'd be easiest to order them at the same time as the other stuff and I was going to stick with Silkolene products (for no good reason) but I can't tell if they would be appropriate (as in being Glycol based & suitable for aluminium radiator respectively ) [oh and Googling hasn't helped either]. So anyone care to venture an opinion on any of the above? Ie on the What or Where or Suitability or anything else ![]() Last edited by 2mths; 24-04-07 at 09:55 PM. |

M&P deal looks quite good. Halfords have a 3 for 2 offer on all bike bits, might be worth a look.
Antifreeze, I think most should be fine for use with Aluminium as most modern engines cars and bikes are all alloy or have alloy heads. Mix should be 50% distilled water and 50% ethylene glycol antifreeze. Oil should be API grade SF or SG - SAE 10W40 - remember you have a wet clutch. Any DOT4 brake fluid should be fine. Spark plugs are right, but for extended high speed riding try CR9E or U27ESR-N Last edited by BigBaddad; 25-04-07 at 06:06 AM. |

also factor in that if its an injected model the TPS and throttle bodies need setting up otherwise it can go all lumpy!.

I'd argue that TPS doesn't really need doing, but yes, it certainly helps.
£55 will buy you your own carb sync gauge from Morgan. This also works for throttle bodies ![]() Mine still needs doing actually, but needs the valves checking too, and there's no point sync'ing throttle bodies when it has to be re-done when the valves are checked. |

As for lumpy - it's a V-twin, I thought they were supposed to be lumpy ![]() On a more serious note I'd like to get it properly set up. When purchased it had a non standard 'can on it and I'm concerned it might be running lean. But if I'm going to go to the efford and expense of that I want to get it comletely sorted, ie take the opportunity to do things like change air-filter & snorkle and investigate whether I need or would benefit from a Power Commander (as ideally I'd like it set-ups for exhaust with and without baffle) But I've still a lot to research and learn about the various options there. So right now my priority is really just to get some fresh oil in it. |

2mths, as I posted the other day, I'm running with no snorkel & a scorpion high level (baffle fitted neatly under the seat, holding my tax disc in place funnily enough
![]() I don't feel it runs too lean like this, and as an example, I recently did a fuel test on it. Seriously boring riding, being smooth, slow acelleration, little use of brakes, short shifting. The flashing light came on at 145miles. That was with £10 worth of fuel, not a full tank! So I put another £10 in her, and rode normally (because the previous £10 was damned boring!). You know what? The flashing light came on at 140miles & it was a hell of a lot more fun. So yes, I'm running lean, and my throttle bodies need sync'ing. But it still doesn't feel too bad, and I like to think I'd notice it if it was too lumpy. There's nothing nicer than a properly setup bike, I've loved it every time it's come away from a service. EDIT: I just worked it out, if you assume fuel costs 91p/ltr, 145 miles on £10 works out at about 60mpg! ![]() ![]() Last edited by Baph; 25-04-07 at 11:18 AM. |

58.7 mpg according to those figures. That's very good based on my experiance (higher than I've ever achieved). That's either one hell of a setup you've got or you weight a lot less than I do
![]() I'm not ignoring your comments Baph. I just would feel much happier to know that the fuelling was ballpark correct. |

I'm leaning more towards me having leaned out the mix (as I said, snorkel removed & high level scoprion with no baffle - also the link pipe leaks a little for added pops).
I too would appreciate knowing roughly what my fueling was like. I know I can always rich up the mix a little by slowing air intake (add the snorkel back), but for now, I like the way she runs. Not sure if I'm bave enough to buy some feeler gauges & have a crack at my own valve check yet though. Slightly OT I know. |

How much fuel you use doesnt show if the bike is running lean or rich!.
FYI..air temp..throttle positions...wind etc have far more of a controlling factor than whether the bike is lean or not!. my race bike with stock engine used less fuel at brands running very rich than it did running lean! |
