Smile Woo Hoo Taking my Test

Booked my CBT / DAS / Test today. So so so so pleased as wasn't going to be able to do it till Feb but how things have changed. Now doing it all in November.

I am really happy and so have started my search for the SV.

Quick question however for all you peeps out there, you may have had a similar sutuation and I was wandering if you can help.......

My fiancee is amazing and has always been behind my wish to do my bike licence, she even came onto this site and read posts etc to understand it more and so she would know what it meant to me. However, now that it is no longer a "Thing that is happening in the future", it is now reality, and she is worried. She is not worried how I will be as she knows what a safe car driver I am, but she is worried about the idiots in their cages.

Is there anything I can do to reasure her that I'm not "Going to die" (Her words not mine!!!!!) (Although my Mother has been saying for years....."Your not having a bike you will either die or have no legs!!!!!!")

Any advice or words of wisdom will be most appreciated.

Cheers

Drew

Drew
all you can do is ride safe, a IAM course might help, as they seem to teach you better road position & better observation skills.

but you cant control the car drivers, so take it easy, & be aware thay might pull out in front of you

a hi viz vest can help

Cheers for the tip. I'm hoping that when I am confident and can take her as pillion (No pun intended) that she gets the bug. I agree though, will get a hi viz vest.

Good luck pal

As for the tidings of doom and gloom, IMO you have to accept the risk that you will fall off at some point, I have done, but was wearing the right gear and was un injured, just learnt an expensive lesson. The other time it hurt quite a lot, but hey I'm still riding and I still love it.
Personally I think people like telling you "OMG you're gonna die.." so they can turn round and go "tsk tsk I told him so" if you do! Killjoys.

Other advice, practice those U turns, and buy a curvy.

Chris

Hi, and welcome...

My girlfriend was/is exactly the same. Its i difficult thing to answer - just try to make sure that you are as safe as you can be, remember that just because you pass your test (hopefully) doesnt mean that the learning stops there.

I have found that riding with other people has improved my riding no end. The peeps from this firum have been a great help.

Have fun, good luck and ride safe.

BB.

It's intensely irritating when people come out with this sort of emotional claptrap and start trying to make your mind up for you. It's your life and you should make your own decisions.

My advice is - learn to ride defensively, make sure that your observation is up to scratch - get an eye test (seriously) and get specs if you need them, anticipate anticipate anticipate, treat every car as though they're about to wipe you out, you can usually spot the pillocks but everyone does the unexpected so ride accordingly, wear hi viz if you want, buy and wear the best kit you can afford - NO TRACKIES/TRAINERS - , get the best training you can afford - and then stop worrying. If you're tense on the bike and expecting to be manslaughtered at any minute then your inputs will be cack and the bike will be all over the road.
