Default this internet thing ??????

I was talking to Monika yesterday and have stolen her idea, but as it struck a cord thought it worth while posting.

What does it mean to you?

A few of my thoughts on the subject.

Having been a forum member for a long time now (about 6 years) I've made some good friends, although I must admit perhaps the price of progress is the change in the feel of the place these days.

I guess at this time of forced immobility it's a lifeline to the world outside and stops me feeling so isolated.

For my own part I've always had a problem with people met over the internet, well at least until I get to see them face to face, they feel some how dis-enbodied or perhaps 2D would be closer. high lighted by thing like those you know from the AR and those you don't.

I'm a frequent ebay user and find the conveniance of it most useful.

Would I miss it, well yes to be honest, something to do when you can't ride your bike.

Be interesting to know what it means to others?

Cheers Mark

We kinda had the internet long before it was the internet, we could communicate with people all over the world at work using systems called SITA and AFTN, then the bulletin boards came along, 300 baud modems and home PC's, CB radio and the like, so I grew up chatting to people I knew I'd never meet, though this new generation of Youface and Mybook stuff leaves me cold.
I find the interweb an important tool these days, resaerch, shopping, communication, entertainment - I find it has taken over from the TV as my favourite waste of time.

I was a late starter in regards to the Internet. It seemed most people had it before me. I grew up without digital anything. Hell I remember when I first got a digital watch. It did nothing but tell the time. I was cool at last.

Would I manage without the Internet? Eventually I probably would, but it would take one hell of a lot of getting used to. I do everything via the Internet. Bank transfers are so easy. No need to go through an automated voice system where you need to repeat everything half a dozen times.

And then there are the people I have met via the web. I can honestly say without the net I would not have anywhere near as many friends as I do. I have always been crap at picking up the phone and having a chin wag. Forget about writing letters. So chatting via msn is fantastic. Helps to keep friends in touch.

My best friend I met via the web.

Technology. Bring it on. As soon as they have invented transportation devices via the web.

The internet - It's my job.

Seriously, 90% of what I do is related to internet technologies, so without out it I would quite possibly be a danger to people with real engineering tools to play with.

I run a European Network, along with unix servers which mostly run applications developed for the internet, even if its used internally. Big Networks, Linux, apache web servers, Bind DNS servers, etc... I would be out of a job without the internet. I've been using it over 12 years now. Scary!

Apart from being unemployed, no one would have Christmas presents this year, I wouldn't know you guys, and I wouldn't spend a lot of money on ebay.

The internet means I can have an easy conversation with mariaon MSN...it feels alot closer than just texting, or writing letters, or bieng on the phone. It means I can keep up to date with science, means I can socialise and not have to go places I dont like (clubs, noisy places) and lets me be a bit careful about making freinds

The internet is a good thing

Oh, and the internet means I dnt have to go out to do crimbo shopping

Interesting question to pose.

I havent always had the internet, but life with it has definately been a big improvement because its made it easier for me to stay in touch with my friends (e.g. using MSN instead of the phone) because I find talking on the phone really difficult because of my hearing impairment. The same can be said with emails.

The greatest thing I can say about the internet though is that if I didnt have it, I would have never met matt. He is now my partner (and has been for around 5 years now) and I intend to spend the rest of my life with him

Its certainly helped me with my degree because there are so many resources available online such as online e-journals, and it has to be said that shopping is so much cheaper! Certainly when it comes to Cd's and DVD's.

Would I miss the internet if I didnt have it? Definately. Would my life have been different without it? Definately.

Maria

Mainly building up my right forearm...

Seriously tho, without it I would have spent a lot more money on servicing, not met the Soho Massive, not started to do my own work on the bike...

I'd survive without it but it'd be a long cold turkey period!
