Is there alot of play in the lever? You can adjust the clutch at both ends of the cable (you'll have to take a plastic cover off to get access to the toher end) and also you can adjust the clutch rod itself (i think its called a worm drive - its a rod that moves inwards to the engine when you pull on the clutch lever). I often leave worm drive adjustment to my more competant dad, but the cable adjustment at the other end should be easy enough. There should be no, or at the most very little free play in the lever

I personally find it a lot easier to have a little bit of free play in the lever as it brings the biting point further inwards. Was on a ride yesterday and one of the guys I was with decided to adjust mine for me as it was loose, I could barely set off properly! Biting point was right at the end of the lever travel, so I got him to change it back next time we stopped
