Default SV650 Tyres

M&P have a good deal on Metzler Rennsports at the moment at £130 a pair. I was thinking of buying a couple of sets if they are any good.

Has anybody had any experience with these? I've never used them before myself, always gone for Conti Sport Attack tyres on the road and in my first season racing I'm a little unsure on what tyres will work best with the SV on track.

I think SuperCorsa's tend to be the tyre of choice for minitwins. if you were wanting metzeler's you'd want racetec's rather than rennsports, but they don't make them in a 160 rear iirc

Well I'm doing a few trackdays before the season, I'll try a pair of the rennsports and a pair of the super corsas and see if I can find any difference.

I'm suspecting that in my first season the rennsports will offer me more grip than I can take advantage of anyway, and the money saved per pair will go towards more frequent changes of tyres. I suspect this will help me more than the difference betweens rennsports and super corsas.

Unfortunately I havn't had a chance to do any trackdays at the end of this year, too much work and not enough spare money. I still plan to test the tyres out but will be doing so pre-season next year now.

the rennnsports havnt been made for a couple of years IIRC and the reason they are cheap is that they are old stock.

Probably perfectly good for trackdaying on but i wouldnt race on em. Racetecs as have been said are the latest incarnation of the rennsport but they are not avaliable in a 160 rear.

Stick to supercorsa pro's and you'll be fine

Oky doky, I've been told! Super Corsa Pros it is then. Where is best to get the Super Corsa Pros as most of the usual suspects only stock it in a 180+ rear. I've found an ebay supplier who has the 160 rear but is there anywhere else?

at a guess the place on ebay is based in wales in which case they are pretty good although the tyres arnt that new.

I just buy mine in bulk at the begginning of the year and this year paid about £190 a set but expect to pay £200 a set now.

Before buying the tyres, you need to check if they are the road or track compound versions of the same tyre.

For the track rubber, the supercorsas will have an SC number representing compound on the sidewall. People tend to go for SC1 front SC2 rear.

Rensports are the same idea but RS1 RS2 etc.

‘Cheap’ tyres tend to be old stock as chunky said, if you want grip, you don’t want old stock …

You can check the age of the tyre from another marking on the sidewall. It’s a 4 digit number. 0205 means that tyre was made in the second week in 2005 4906 means 49th week 2006 etc. The ‘cheap’ ones tend to be 2+ years old … tyres are best <2yr old (I like to have ones that are <6 months old if I can get them – but struggle, even trackside, I feel conned paying the full £230+ for a set of tyres that are >1yr old, but have no choice!!).

Cheers for the advice guys. I'll have a search around the local tyre dealers to try and get the right sort ordered in.
