Hey all.
Bought a new battery from dealer on 8th Jan and all seemed fine. Until yesterday, when I got up and tried firing it up to get to work...nothing. Jump started it and it was ok for the return 75 mile round trip. This morning, dead again !! Charged it up for half an hour and it fired up. Came out of work tonight, flat again. Jump started it again and got home. Whilst running, put the metre accross and it was reading 15.1v, according to Haynes manual that's ok. Then I smelt, and saw smoke coming out of the battery itself so stopped the engine. Took the VERY hot battery out and it's started to melt and distort !!!! Is this just a dodgy battery that's faulty or could it be something the bikes doing to it ?? Cheers for any replies...Ash |

15.1V sounds a bit high.
Why was the battery replaced? Is it a sealed battery where the dealer added the acid then capped it - and if so did he do it properly, (i.e. waited a good hour after adding acid before sealing)? |

That voltage is a dab high, but I doubt it would melt a healthy battery.
I think the battery is internally shorted.b

AFAIK if you cap one of the batteries which you add your own acid to, too soon then it can knacker them. You're supposed to wait a few hours iirc, maybe the dealer didn't leave it long enough?
Or, your RR is knackered and overcharging it at high revs.

Cheers for the replies. I put the old battery on and jump started it so I could take knackered battery back and just before doing so I thought I'd check the voltage. 19.9v !!!!! Yep, RR gone !!! ?25 for one off a 7000 mile bike, I'll have that...FYI: ?123+VAT for a new one !!!
