is it possible to measure the width of a road on google maps?
ie.... this bridge, (the darker shaded bit) http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll...06276&t=h&z=18 ![]() Last edited by hovis; 27-02-08 at 10:06 AM. |

Can you not just print it and measure with a ruler? The scale is on the bottom left?
I assume this is from your bump? I would imaginne the insurance would prefer the hard copy than an electronic one which could have been doctored (as long as you quote the page). Either that or get an OS map (may carry more weight than google). Ste

you can measure it in google earth, the standalone program, which i just did and it gives 6.60m, but how accurate that is in the real world i wouldn't like to say, although the image is quite clear, as a topographical surveyor by trade i'd say not very, certainly nowhere near the standard of a police crime scene survey.
have you tried calling the local council's highways department? they might have someone who could measure it if they passed by, failing that you could commision a survey, but that wouldn't be cheap, and we're a bit far away. OS mapping is probably not going to be any more accurate than measuring off google earth ...

i was just wondering, nobody has asked me the width, if it is 6.6 meters, thats wider than i thought, but still not wide enough for 2 way traffic, if it was narrower i might of mentioned it,

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/sustainable/manforstreets/ if you click on the big pdf file, and go to pae 79 it'll show you a few different widths and the amount of traffic they can accomodate, 5.5m would be a typical two way street where two cars can pass easily, and if you see the amount of blurring in the google earth image the carriageway itself could well be only 5.5m so i'd not mention it, as a car and motorcycle should be able to pass without incident on a road that wide...

I just measured it as 6.2m from inside the parapets. If you wanted to use the data in court you'd have to get it measured by a calibrated instrument. When I worked in transportation engineering you weren't allowed to take distances from tape measures for example.
