Default 24-hour Licensing

Notice I used the term '24 hour licensing' rather than '24 hour drinking' the news seem to always refer to?

I've never encountered such an establishment in the UK, do they even exist?

Newcastle - nope
Manchester - nope
Cardiff - nope
(AFAIK)

when the change happened. I went upto Phil the landlord of one of my locals and told him I had a problem with his new license application.

"Everyone else has applied for an increase in hours. You have applied for a decrease." He thought for 10 seconds (Manc) then big smile appeared.

My locals, tend to open till about 4/5am for the right people and one does it till the cleaners come in.

Personal opinion is the whole way we tackle drinking in this country is wrong. I started going out for a quite drink/game of snooker/darts with my dad aged about 14 and would have a couple of pints. The landlords knew I was under age, but as I was with my father I was under supervision. Keeping kids out of pubs or hiding them in groups is not going to educate them to drink sensibly. By effectively forcing them to hang out on street corners they have no role model, no supervision. nobody to ensure they get home before capacity sets in.

We reap what we sow. and in this case it is a nation of boozed up binge drinkers.

With my work, I'm aware of many who have 24 hours licenses, but NONE of them (this is in Leicester anyway) use them for a full 24 hours, most close at either 4am or 6am.

Not sure what it's like elsewhere in the country.

+1

It is an easy target for news paper - drinks, drugs speeding, occasional rape or murder ... that whats keeps the viewers tuned in. Personally I see no problem with 24 hrs opening hours. Works in Europe perfectly fine.
