Music recommendation site?

A few years ago when I decided to take up reading I used to use a book that kind of gave recommendations for other books you may like if you liked a particular one. For example if you enjoyed Noddy goes to London you may also enjoy Tropic of Capricorn by Henry Miller .

Is there such a thing for music? Now what with having an iPod and all I am keen to expand my collection of oldies and so need some inspiration, rather than Inspiral Carpets.

Ideas?

I sometimes have a mad fit and buy tracks off of Itunes by bands I've never heard of, have a quick listen pick a few tracks and take a risk. I've found some corking bands that way.

Also I look at albums I've got on amazon and see what else people who bought those albums bought again, sort of following my similar risk taking exercise, again I've found some good albums that way to.

What sort of stuff do you like Rich I might be able to make a few suggestions, but beware according to Liz I do like to listen to dirge...

last.fm might be worth a shot - its exactly like you suggest, except the recommendations are more like "people who like this also like that". As you're no doubt aware, internet people can be weird... there's at least one person out there who likes heavy metal and j-pop, and last.fm threw that to me as a possible choice. Luckily, there's a ban button, so it won't play stuff like that again.
