Default SV Problem, Racing Engine

Night all, newbie here looking for some advise with an isue I have with my bike, basic I've not got a clue about bike / car maintenance and struggling witht eh bike at moment, the issue is that about three weeks ago the bike didn't start , then I charged the battery over night, the bike started when I tried it the net day, all going well then about three days later started having a problem the bike started losing power, then when in neutral the bike started to race, it woud sit at around 1500 revs then without reving etc the engine reved up to circa 5000 revs etc, my next door neighbour tested the battery and altinator which all seemed ok i.e. 12v etc.

Preferably would like not to take it to the garage.

I know the above is a bit long winded and hopfully this is the right place to ask for help so fingers crossed!! If this is not the right place any chance of irecting me to some ware else.

1. Welcome to the .Org!!

2. I take it you mean the engine is 'racing' not an engine for racing.

3. What year is your bike? Any modifications?

4. Where are you located, there may be a member close to you who can help.

Try the simplest things first: sticky throttle cable... get some oil down there, could also be worn/about to go, the exact same thing happened on my 125 before my throttle cable snapped and I had to walk 4 miles home with it.

Another way of checking if the cable is effed is if the throttle stays on when you let go of it and you have to physically move it back.

THanks for the advise, I starting to remeber the chain now and I washed the machine and quite possibly pulled something off. I start checking as everyone suggests and let you all know.

you may have moved the idle aswell when washing, it is just here:

but this wouldn't make it suddenly race* as an incorrect setting on the idle would just keep it at high revs in neutral; or stop it starting at all. Plus its one of the easiest things to knock when cleaning.

I still say its a throttle/cable issue, but its also something worth checking. If you are worried at all though the best bet is probably get it checked over by a dealer.

*unless the automatic choke was allowing it to happen, I don't know for sure

Ill check this out, further, when I rev the engine when in neutral to say 1500 after a period of tie the engine suddenly revs up o say 6500 revs?
