So next year brings about a 1200cc capacity limit for v-twins. The 1098 is 100cc below this limit. Am I missing something?!

Yes, the race bike is going to have a larger capacity. And be released on the road as the R version I believe. I personally think Ducati never expected to get 1200 twins allowed, so made an 1100. Then got a nice surprise

Ah right! As I understand it the engine, although can be tuned, the lump has to be kept the same so can't be bored out. But if they're releasing a 1200cc 'R' version that would pass the homolosawhatisit rules.

strictly speaking the 999 probably didn't qualify as a "production" bike this year, as they aren't/weren't making them any more

It's also worth noting that the homologation rules were changed for 2008/09. Where previously only a minimum of 150 bikes needed to be produced to qualify, now it is necessary to build a minimum of 1000. From 2010 onwards, that figure will be 3000.
Also, initially the 1200 duc' twin will have to carry an extra 6Kg and be fitted with a 50mm air restrictor plate, but that will apparently be subject to change as the season progresses. |

I live next to the old man Michael Rutter and was asking him the exact same thing about 5 days ago. He is on Ducati 1098 this season and apparently the way they are restricting the performance of his bike is to keep the standard road going pistons, crank and conrods, thus changing the compression. This means the revs are limited, thus limiting the amount of power produced

Although called the 1098, it's actually 100cc bigger for Superbike.
