I need a new chain & sprockets and seeing as I have an Abba stand with swing arm removal kit, but no chain splitter/riveter (and I want the swingarm out to clean/regrease it at some point soon anyway), it seems to make sense to buy an endless chain, rather than the usual ride to the dealers with a split link in. I've also experienced first hand just how long a well oiled OE chain can last, and given that I do reasonably high mileage on my bike, I'd prefer one that will last another 40K miles before it starts to display significant signs of wear.
Upon ringing up my dealers, however, they have informed me that the Suzuki OE chain for the K4 isn't endless, but comes split and needs to be riveted. I was fairly sure this wasn't the case, but could someone confirm? Are they taking the michael because I explained I didn't have a chain splitter/riveter, hence wouldn't be able to do normal chains myself? As an aside, if I do opt to go the DIY route, do I need anything unusual other than the swingarm removal special sockets and the afformentioned abba stand (I've got Halfords' expert socket sets, both 3/8" and 1/4" drive)? I don't want to get half way then have to put the bike back together to ride down to Halfords. ![]() |

What make and grade of chain is it? If you buy OE it'll be twice the price of the exact same aftermarket one, but it will come in a nice Suzuki box.
Suzuki don't make their own chain, it'll be made by DID, EK, RK or possibly someone else. If I were you I'd buy a DID ZVM and fit that instead, because there's no stronger or longer lasting chain on the market, and you can be assured Suzuki won't have fitted the most expensive/strongest/longest lasting one available when they built a budget bike such as an SV650. |

IIRC the OE chain is an endless DID 525 item. Certainly was for the curvy bikes, see no reason it would have changed. The swing arm nuts are done up fairly tight, make sure you have a torque wrench with the appropriate range before you start. It'll probably need to be 1/2" drive....

The current one is a DID and the chap at the dealers confirmed the replacement they were looking at was a DID when they checked. I've got a 60-200nm 1/2" drive torque wrench (as well as 3/8" 0-60Nm). I'll have a looksee in my Haynes now I'm back home and check the size. Any recommendations on where to buy the DID ZVM mail order, Lozzo?
Ta for the advice chaps. |

Shop around Ceri, prices vary greatly depending on what bulk discounts are being offered to whom and who's got lots in stovck. DID ZVM chain is the same no matter who you buy it from.

Some 1/2 drive sockets will be a big help here, not sure what sizes you need for the pointy.

Morning all.
Don't forget to have a set of exhaust gaskets to hand if you're taking the swinging arm off. Cheers. |

Ta Spannerman, I'd not considered this.
