Given the SV650s CV carbs are a bit ****e to start with I was thinking of swapping for something a bit better. Has anyone else tried fittting a set of VTR1000 carbs? Or are they just to large to even consider?

The carbs work fine, or as far as I know they're not a limiting factor. Certainly people who take engine modifications rather seriously don't seem to find a major reason to swap them out. What have you already done, and what are you hoping to achieve?
I'd have thought VTR carbs would be too wide, without doing major head work it's likely to make it run badly as there won't be enough airflow to make use of the larger diameter, and will suffer problems at lower air/engine speeds. But that's my guess based on no practical work and a bit of rough theory.

VTR carbs are huge they'll kill the midrange, you won't get any power boost because the head doesn't flow well enough IMO. It'll be worse to start because the stupidly big carbs won't be atomising the fuel right.
Bugger to start? Have you tried servicing it maybe?

There is nothing wrong with the SV carbs, in fact they are one of the best OE carbs in the bike world!!! The carbs will never be a problem for the bike, just owners who have no brain or patience, they are in no way a limiting factor for heavily tuned SV's as Jambo mentioned.
The only real choice for replacing the carbs would be to go for Keihin flatslides (41mm), however at nearly a grand for a pair is it really worth it??? I think not. |

Bigger to get going? Na, thats codswallop! I've used my bike all through winter, no problems - even in that freezing fog just before winter! Sure, it takes a while to warm up, and if you dont use super-unleaded or add some additive, theres a bit of carb icing and lack of a decent idle for about 15 minutes before everything gets warm, but really, suzuki have the fueling pretty good with those carbs.
Can be a bit snatchy from lower revs, but then oyu just need to be gentle with the grip your right hand ![]() Matt |

They're 48mm carbs, so if 41mm FCR's are only just about right and stupidly expensive for a highly strung race bike, then 48 is going to give you nowhere near enough mix velocity to draw the fuel anything like properly.
Also I have a feeling it would be very sensetive to balance. Now then putting those on a TL or SVthou might be a better idea. EFi, pfft.

Yep, the question is "why do you think they're bad". Once you reach a certain level the swap to flatslides is definately a good idea, but they're troublesome on road bikes (horrible to start a cold bike on flatslides) and they don't coddle the throttle hand like CV carbs do- sure, they give massively better throttle response but you can't chase the throttle, they just sandbag.

Thanks for the wise words, it all sounds like good sense. I have just built my first SV650s out of a basket case and a wreck and got her an MoT. My carbs run great and while I appreciate the smoothness of constant velocity carbs I do miss the instant power of flatslides my Gixer had. Oh and I'd run out of things to do! Sometimes you need a reality check when yiou are dreaming about motorcycles.
Cheers, I've stopped lusting after FCRs or flatslides. |
