what year is the bike?

i thought he had replaced the starter motor, and fitted a new battery

so next i would look at the regulater/rectifier, as its a commen fault

Sorry - equally ignorant but - before when you turned it on (before it was Fixed) you got no lights, indicators or anything due to a short and now you get lights etc but the starter switch won't turn the engine over? (just checking)

If it has a choke on it, then it is a curvy.

In which case, with the battery running down overnight it seems, I would be checking the known fault of the wiring loom chaffing through against the frame, under the riders seat. Remove the seat and check for the wiring on the LHS of bike rubbing against the frame or possibly the bolt that holds the riders seat in place. If the wiring looks worn, it is likely the short is here.

Failing that, it may be the rectifier / regulator and Blue_SV650S did an excellent job in this thread of talking a novice mechanic through checking it all.

This may sound a bit patronising, but have you checked the kill switch?
