Default Hello (and a question on curvy cam swaps)

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to say hello and ask a quick question.

About a year ago I got myself a blue sk2 after a 7 year break from bikes due to kids - now the mrs has got 2 of the things I'm no longer biologically useful so she let me get another bike I like the sv alot - its perfect for the commute to work and whilst its never going to set the world on fire its quick enough and has got its own bit of character.

Recently I've been thinking about getting something bigger (theres an advert for a tls on the notice board at work ) but i've decided i can't really justify the expense/insurance at the moment and I don't really need anything bigger. As such I'll be keeping the sv for the time being (unless I unexpectedly come into some money - which I really can't see happening). I have decided though that if I do keep the sv then I want to get the most from it.

So far its had normal stuff done to it - brakes/suspension/can are sorted so now I'm thinking what else I can do to it (because I like to fiddle). I'm thinking of swapping the cams first then maybe getting a full system/proper filter e.t.c. later in the year. Now to my question:

I'm ideally looking at getting a set of pointy intake cams for the best benefit but can't seem to find these anywhere for a reasonable price. As such I'm now considering an extra set of curvy intakes however I'm aware that these won't give me the full benefits of the pointy cams. Can anyone tell me the difference between the two - I'm optimistically thinking of 5-7 hp from the pointy intakes - what can I expect from the curvy ones?

Also - does anyone have a set of either spare they want to sell me? As mentioned above I'm ideally looking for pointy cams but if I can expect to get most of the gains of the pointy cams from curvy cams and I can get them at the right price then I'll be very tempted.

I posted in the stuff wanted section too (here) but haven't had any replies yet so was hoping this thread might get more attention

Cheers!

IMO you won't get all the benefit from the cams without sorting out the gasflow first with the system and filter.

+ 1, system and filter first then the cams.

OK - thanks guys - in that case at least I can wait for a bit to see if I can find any pointy cams

In my opinion, it isn't worth the money if you are after performace gain. If you want HP, then sell the 650 and put the extra cash into say an SV1000 ...

I think you will get max power gain if you mix and match cams, but you are still going to be dissapointed.

The pointy cam swap at best it is subtle (holds max power for a few more revvs before dying off), the bike isn't going to suddenly rip your arms off!!

As I said, to me a misappropriation of funds

Yup - I completely understand what you're saying.

I'm not expecting anything very dramatic from doing any of the work but if I can spend a couple hundred £s, enjoy taking the bike to bits and putting it back together, and get a bit of extra power, IMO thats just about worth it, and a whole lot less hassle than looking for a new bike and selling the current one.

Really I'm quite happy with the sv - its cheap to run/insure/reliable and goes pretty well too - thats the thing - I don't really need anything bigger or faster.

True - cams and airflow are about my limit though - I'm not planning on building a bike like Dangerous Daves (although if money and time were no object)...

Start by getting a nice system on there, M4 for a Curvy, and sort the fueling out mate! There is no added performance from a slip on can.

I'll keep my eyes open for one. I know the slip on can doesn't give any performance (which is why I haven't rejetted since fitting it) but when I got the bike it had the original can on and the slip on was the right price at the time (and it sounds soooo much better).

Thanks for the help though
