Mate of mine did the next door neighbour (Saudi Arabia) for six months - he came back saying he was very glad he did it, had no regrets about doing it, and would recommend doing it, but wouldn't personally want to do it again. Think he found the culture shock a little big, and he was based in one of those "western compounds" where limited access to alcohol etc is more tolerated.
Although isn't Qatar basically one big US air base? Think the entire population is only about half a million and most of those are yanks. As such you may find it's a lot more western friendly, though you might not get to experience the "middle eastern culture". |

Not Quatar, But Dubai and Oman in that part of the world. China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Philippines.
Remember in the oil rich tolerant middle east. ALL foreigners are scum and only fit to be servants. There is a pecking order and those from across the Arabian sea are only fit to clean or young ones can be camel jockeys, Woman from the former USSR are all prostitutes and western Europeans can serve them by running or providing to their oil industry. The expat lifestyle is good. But you have to work hard and that lets you play hard as well. As said above air conditioning is a necessity. 5 mins in the desert gets a fair old sweat on. A 10 day field visit in Oman in the 80s cost me over a stone. Somehow I think I now need to go back for a month.

If its not too personal, what sort of work are you going out there for?
Always wanted to have the opportunities to work abroad meself, but too many debts to leave it. |

I worked on and off in the States for 3 years, it's ok if you don't mind being away from family/friends for extended periods. You need to work out how to get the money back into the UK without being stung for tax. I was banking in Jersey and the Isle of Man which reduced my liabilty once transferred to the mainland.
