Default Power Commander Vs. Stock ECU Re-Mapping

Mornin' all,

Planning on getting my exhausts shortened (by about a third, nothing too outrageous!) and will have to get the fueling re-adjusted accordingly.

Now I've got a Power Commander 3 USB (not fitted yet) and spoke to a local tuning garage who claims that he can get more power out of it by re-mapping the stock ECU instead of using the Power Commander.

Anyone had any experience or knowledge to prove/disprove his claim before I start flashing the cash.

6 of one half a dozen of the other to be honest. I go down the power commander route for minitwins and get good results, other guys go down the stock ecu remap and get good results. The way I see it, if your dealer is a prower commander salesman he will adivse you that. If he doesnt sell them he will tell you a stock re-map is better. Get my drift. I dont think that he will be able to get any more power out of the re-map. But I wouldnt argue with the fact that he can get the same. As I have seen both results.

The stock ECU has enough scope to be remapped more than what the SV engine can be tuned, the PC is good but it really is a bit of an overkill on the SV!

Question Re: Power Commander Vs. Stock ECU Re-Mapping

This is prob a really silly question that every knows the answer to but...
How do u remap the ecu...? How does it all work?
I don't know much about this but it sounds interesting

I think on a similar theme (did not want to start a new thread just for this) has anyone ever played with power commander, I have just fitted an arrow full system and wondered if I need to alter mapping (mine had stock front pipes with a micron end can before), and if so can it be diy,ed also I dont have the cables or software, I know you can download maps from website but where can I get cables, thanks for any help, ps the power commander made quite a difference to mine when fitted with end can and K + N filter, I have the dyno chart for before and after.

The PC is really an overkill on the SV, it offers so much more than you can actually use on this type of bike.

Personally I would opt for the OEM remap, I have seen great results from all the Pointys I have fiddled with and it is cheaper too considering you have to go through the dyno runs on top of the price as well.

How much would it cost for a remap (approx) and does anyone have any dyno before/after from just the remap? Does the bike need to go on the dyno to do the remap or can you just tell the person remapping the type of can/exhaust you have?

For a full and effective fuel map the bike will need a dyno run, try searching for your nearest tuning/dyno centre for a quote.

Before and after dyno print outs are irrelevant to compare unless you have the same bike and exhaust as someone else. You will get the same results as a PC as you would with a remapped ECU. Getting the fuelling adjusted for just a can is a waste of time, slip on cans don't release extra power only full systems do that!
