Default x-rated?

It was Lucy's sixth birthday yesterday. One of the pressies was a Wii and a couple of suitable games (Wii sports and High School Musical). She likes those sorts of things, which is nice.

A young lad from nearby was visitinig as he does - nice lad - we get on well with his parents etc so there's no real issues as such.

What surprised me (now I've had time to think about it) was the question he asked..."Have you got resident evil?"

Ok ok I know...maybe I should have, but I haven't. I am certainly of the opinion that six years of age is too young for that sort of game. He is also six. It's just the way that some people are more blase about these sorts of things I suppose - I was quite surprised - do I need to get out more?

Depends how you veiw resident evil...its kinda fantasy, zombies arnt real and as long as you teach your kids that, then I guess its ok.

But it is a gory game, i used to get scared by the first one.

I do, however, recommend resident evil chronicles. Good game. Maybe not for kids.

Resident Evil 4 for Wii is one of the best games ever. Get it for yourself, but it's not really suitable for 6 year olds.

When I used to have a games shop you would regularly get parents buying their kids 18 rated games and using the excuse 'its no worse than they see on the news'

Yeah, whatever...

My 8 and 6 year old play games like Lego Star Wars, Lego Indy, Mario Strikers, Ben 10 etc but I wouldn't let them anywhere near a 15 or 18 rated game or film.

A friend of our lets his kids (same age as mine) watch films like Aliens and stuff, but wont let them watch The Simpsons.

Go figure......

I got addicted to Resident Evil on its first release and yes it did scare me when it was four am AM and I had been playing for sixteen hours solid trying to get through with no saves for maximum points! Yes I really was that much of a nerd.

One question though, when I was a young child I used to read avidly and devoured many horror and sci-fi books that could have been considered well above my reading age. Is there a difference between reading a rather graphic Horror novel by say Clive Barker and watching the film adaption?

I also discovered the Omen films when I about twelve and watched them avidly, especially when the raven pecked out the woman's eyes and she was run over by the great big truck. Yet I grew up perfectly normal, although I am Satanist!

Something that has always struck me as the most scary thing in the world though is something that Children are encouraged to laugh at. I find Clowns to be horrifying! Maybe kids in the modern day are just less scare than we were?

My eldest lad is 7 and plays mortal combat (1on his psp he also has grand theft auto liberty city(again1.I understand parents protecting thier children from these type of games, but then again i suppose it may depend on each childs individual personality on how they approach such games.

I would like to think my lad has his head screwed on and knows its only a game which he would'nt try to act out or be influenced by.

Why since i subbmitted my post has the number 8 turned into a cool smiley?

I'll sell you resident evil if you want it - virtually unused.

Or swap for another game?

The cool smiley is made using 8 and ) if you put a space inbetween you'll get the 18 you're looking for.

Not having any kids I cannot really comment but do know that I wouldn't let my 5 year old niece play my horror games but she can play Moto GP as she loves the bikes!

On a slightly different tangent to this, my 4 year old nephew watched Power Rangers for the first time recently.

The result that followed was him jumping around kicking and punching anything and everyone for the next hour.

Soon got a slap from me, cheeky little git!
