Default Office Politics

A little bit of geek talk in here, but not much.

I've just had one of the developers come over to me screaming and shouting at me.

Why? Because we have a tool we use to connect to computers around the globe, and this tool automatically finds an IP address from our Database in order to connect.

When this IP discovery fails (because the terminal isn't in the DB for whatever reason), we're given the option of entering manually. When you do that, the tool runs off to the DB, checks it's for the right site, and updates the Database.

The developer was shouting at me (in the open plan office) for entering "blah blah blah" as the IP, thereby forcing auto discovery to fail every time as only the first manual entry updates the database.

So I sat, and listened, and thanked him for his comments. I also said I wouldn't do it again.

Then I waited 10mins, and went to have a chat with his manager, after talking to my manager.

"Hi, I've just had a chat with Duncan because I entered invalid data for manual IP assignment in LMS, do you remember that I was specifically asked to UAT LMS?"...

"Good, I've just had a chat with Clive, my manager, and he's asked me to inform you that because of Duncan's attitude, he is now going to refuse to assign resource to UAT for you for the forseeable future, from our entire department. The whole point of UAT is testing that the application does as it should, even when a user enters incorrect data. I suggest that you work on the Functionality Brief, and fix the bugs I reported a couple of weeks ago - including the one concerning manual IP entry."

It was fun watching Duncan walk back over here to eat his words, and apologise.

I went into Hospital for a serious Op a couple of years ago. My boss drove me there and wished me luck and hoped she would see me after.

On the day of my surgery, she was sacked for an offence she was later found innocent of in a tribunal.

When I was fit enough to return to work, the place was a shambles, my Boss having been used as a scapegoat for senior level incompetence.

The politics in my office is insane, up until recently quil pens were still used and the directors building had a butler.

My MD went on a communications course on tuesday........wednesday he came in and shut the door to his office all day so it must have gone well.
