I understand that you don't believe I hold the record for Land's End to John O'Groats. This despite me being asked by Simon Hargreaves of Bike magazine to write a piece to accompany their article on attempting it on old bikes last winter, the very article that seems to have lead to your idea to attempt the run again this winter!

Blimey news spreads fast. This discussion only happened last night.

What I said was that I was going to attempt to do the run up and back in 24 hours between chirstmas and new year. I never said it was possible but I figuered it would be a hell of a challenge and something that might convince some people to dig into there pockets and donate some cash to charity.

The basis for this is that I have done 1685miles in under 24 hours before travelling accross the states from Galveston the LA. Had less than a days rest and then done the whole thing back again.

To be honest I thought that the record time was less than that but i still feel it can be done in that much time, its just a matter of beating the cold and keeping going. And doing the scotish part first.

hmm i wonder if i could do it on my CG for charity LOL

Ask Champ about his run from Italy to Huddersfield. If I recall correctly he only did it because he was on a promise with some girl or other.

Well, I know him fairly well, and he's usually not one to make stuff up. He said that you "didn't seem to believe that Champ had done the JOL- LE run faster than the SOB run in whichever mag it was". Did you not express that view?

Pretty good - that beats my best single day distance by some margin. I've done Venice to Huddersfield (about 1100 miles), Adelaide to Sydney (about 1100 miles) and Florence to Cheltenham (about, er, 1100 miles). Don't seem to be able to get past that 1100 mark All of these were in a single day's riding, mind - from morning til night. Also, be aware that covering big miles in the USA is a bit easier than the UK. (And - according to maps.live.com, Galverston to Los Angeles is 1564.1 miles. Mind you, my 884 miles for the end to end is shorter nowadays, with some new roads).

Well, you're welcome to try. But I wouldn't wouldn't want to try it with today's traffic, today's attidude to speeding (no cameras in my day), and least of all in winter - do you realise how much of your journey is going to be in the dark?

Oh christ, I was 21, just failed my exams at Uni, in Italy on hols with some mates, just about out of money, and my girlfriend was in Huddersfield. I decided to surprise her...
