Use the Silkonene semi synth 4T. I used this for a good 40000 miles in my SV and i still think its a very good oil. I currently use Moutl 5100 semi.

Semi is always good as 99% of the time you can get some brand of semi synth from garages and such like. Not everyone stock fully synth.

Always used this as it was the cheapest at my local back street garage. About £15 for 3 litres. Then he changed to Shell so used this the last time i changed the oil.

You can happily mix semi with full and even mineral if you like. I'd be careful buying it from garages though - make sure it's specifically for bikes and meets the JASO MA spec - then your clutch and gearbox will be ok.
Fully syn will always give you the best performance and protection - but for everyday riding - part syn is perfectly acceptable - and for top up in an emergency - even mineral will be ok. If you MUST use a car oil for top up - use the most basic mineral you can get - probably a 15W-40 / 10W-40.

I thought I'd heard of people suffering from clutch-slip when running fully-synth? Maybe I'm imagining it....

If your clutch is on the way out - any new oil could tip it over the edge, even a part syn - but most quality bike oils now are tested to a specific Japanese wet clutch spec - JASO MA - this means that it's wet clutch ( and gearbox ) compatible - if it is ok in a race SP2 engine ( which is what one of the Oil companies uses for testing ) - certainly will be in an SV650 !

Fully syn car oils will almost certainly give you problems as will many part syn car oils because the later formulations contain friction modifiers.

As you say " thought I'd heard " - normally turns out to be because the wrong stuff has been used.
