You have to register with racesafe and then do some training and then you start marshalling at club events etc to learn the ropes.

If you drop coombest a PM I'm pretty sure he is a marshall, he gave me loads of useful advice when I was thinking about doing it a while ago. I decided against it in the end as I dont have the free time to put into it.

Sounded like though if you did invest time in it that it was good fun and a great way of spending a weekend.

Cheers Fizz, its been something Id been thinking about doing for a while, just dont know if it will fit in with my shift pattern and whether they would be happy with someone who will only be available at certain times and not every event sort of thing, I may well drop coombest a line, cheers

Look on Ten-Tenths (motoring forum), there is a big marshals section there.

Also, www.marshals.co.uk IIRC. I do it every now and then at Outlon, GREAT fun.

I know a couple of people, 1 of which did the training this year and 1 who has marshalled for a few years. The guy who did the training this year decided against doing any events and the other marshalls at about 4-5 events a year (BSB at Oulton and at Redgate for Donington Moto GP every year). She enjoys doing it, but says you have to remember they are very long days. Raceday at Oulton for example means getting there at 8am to sign on and standing on the same corner for 9 hours or more, come rain or shine. And although you are on the otherside of the fence, it can be difficult to actually 'watch' the racing as a spectator would as you need to be constantly on the ball in case summat happens.

I think Racesafe (the BSB marshalls) were over run with applications this year due to their advertising on ITV during BSB races last year and there aren't as many Racesafe marshall places at Donington Moto GP this year (i was told why but can't remember now).

Thanks for all the feedback guys, going to have a look at doing it, racesafe say they are not accepting marshalls for this season now but to get back to them later in the year, going to look at other avenues, thanks again.

Ah ha! The possibility of fresh blood!!!!
We were indeed over-run with applications - however - there weren't so many that actually came to training days (although there still were more than in any previous year!) and we got a nice chunk of new marshals who have stayed on!!

As for Donington...
Racesafe and MCRCB played no part whatsoever in the British MotoGP round this year... I can only imagine it has something to do with who owns MCRCB/MSVR and the circuit not wanting to pay them any money!!!

Marshalling does mean long days and it can be very hard work.
BUT it is very addictive and I have made lots of very close friends from across the country (makes Christmas parties interesting but expensive prospects!). As mentioned, you may get the best seats in the house but sometimes can't watch much of the racing.
The campsites and other facilities can be dire and the food can be somewhat less than appetising.
It's expensive (even more so this year with the price of diesel!) and you don't get much thanks for it most of the time, either!

HOWEVER!

I absolutely love it!
I cant think of many ways I'd rather spend my weekend!
I've spent one day 'the wrong side of the fence' this year (as a spectator) at Donington BSB and couldn't really cope with it - even with a scanner so I could hear the race channel!!
I enjoy my marshalling about as much as riding my bike!
I've told my Fiancee that there's two things I will not give up! - My bikes & my marshalling... She hates bikes!!

All in all - it's a very rewarding thing to do, you will make a lot of very good friends (it's a very intense (good) atmosphere and you're looking out for each other's lives!) and very probably enjoy yourself.

If you don't like it, there's no pressure to carry on! They don't even expect you to do one round if you feel you won't enjoy it!

There will be more training but not this year due to the amount of work the organisers (who are all volunteers too!) have to do this year!

Drop me a PM if you want any further info/inside info!

Contact race clubs direct.

I marshall for CRMC, they always needs marshalls and you get paid abit for money.
