As you may know, the decision was made last week that the SV will have to go. I seem to have spent a lot of time since then blubbing, even though I know it makes financial sense. I love that bike. Its not just a collection of metal and plastic to me, it's more than that. We've had an SV for all but 4 months of our 7 years together, it's a part of our history.
I never thought he would ever have to go. I suppose I thought that like an old war horse he would have an honourable retirement and would always be there in my front room. Female friends I've spoken to seem to understand how I'm feeling, but on the whole guys don't, and it's made me wonder. Is emotional attachment to vehicles purely a 'girl' thing, or will guys admit to it too? How many of you have ever felt like this about a vehicle?

AYE...Suzy would have to be smashed into a million pieces before I'd part with her.
Spent the same on her to do her up as I did when I handed over the brass for her when 'me and Im' had just started seeing each other. Shes priceless to me...warts and all. We've been all over the place two up, a few rallies and a few tender moments have been spent between the three of us. Theres been 2 owners 'me and Im' she was the first brand spanking new bike he bought, and it was bought with the compo money from spilling blood over a vauxhall ![]() I'm not as emotionally attached to Dave though, he went down the road and cracked a big split up the fairing, I thought ah well have to get another....if it had have been her, I'd have been devastated Now I know a bloke not too far away from me that is very attached to a YPVS350LC..he wouldn't tell you so, but she sleeps in the house, and he'd try his upmost to get her in the front room of our house(whenever we share 4 walls that is!) He keeps telling me she deserves a glass cabinet next to the fireplace in the alcove ![]()

Hell no, boys too
![]() It blew up after about 18 months - apparently you need to put oil in them every now and again, something technical like that. Six years later and it's still sat on my drive, can't bring myself to get rid of it and keep telling myself I'll squeeze a rover V8 in there one day ![]() |

Definately attached to my bike...when I couldnt ride for 18 months I used to go out to the shed and talk to it...quite sad really
![]() ![]() ![]() I was quite attached to my Moto Guzzi too - named Monty (Monty Guzzi - geddit?) but not my bandit. The only cars Ive ever been attached to (and Ive had many over 30 years!) was my very first car - a blue Ford Escort called Eric and my second car a Yellow ford Capri called Elsie (number plate began OLC)... ![]() |

My first car- was a 1981 escort. Had lots of fun in that- was sad to see it go, but I drove it into the ground eventually...
My SV- as it's my first bike, but also with getting more involved in maintenance of it and having crashed it, there's more of a 'bond' between us!! |

They are just collections of metal, plastic and rubber to me. I don't think any vehicle or vehicle part has any value above its useful value unless it has been involved in some significant event in history i.e, been a world class race winner or a part thereof.
Classic bikes/cars aren't worth a bean over scrap value in my opinion. Just because the majority of those that were made no longer exists doesn't mean to say that those ones that survived are any good. If they were all good to start with then more would have survived. I've quite happily broken 'classic' vehicles that were apparently good just to make a decent profit from them, and I'm quite happy to take good money off the fools who throw thousands of pounds at minging old piles of crap just because "it's a classic". They are just a collection of parts, nothing more, nothing less. |
