hi new here so go gentle, ive an 98 (s reg) sv650, non faired version, i love it too bits prefer it to my 2000 R1, but seems to have a problem, i have to mention mods dont i? ok, leovince exhaust full system, k&n filter thats it i think, anyway seems to have the water in carbs thing, ive modded the fuel tank breather that tends to kink, drained the carbs once....but problem still seems persistent.Ive spoken to the local suzuki garage, who agree its the problem, (loses power as if only running on pilot jets....stop bike wait few minutes and problems gone...for a while anyway,i use bike alot at night and in rain etc...)i fitted new v rated plugs just before i spoke to the garage....anyway, is this just a case of offing carbs stripping and cleaning, or is it /could it be something else?Seems to run fine during warm daylight riding with the occasional dose of the above...any help would be massively useful and much appreciated..

Just to clairfy, it either does it at night or when its been raining ?
If it only does it when the roads wet during or after rain. I'd be more inclined to think its water getting to the front spark plug.

Double check that the tank filler drain tube hasn't rusted through, letting water into the tank. I haven't tried it but I'd suggest fitting a piece of pipe to the lower end of the tank tube and blow through while blocking the drain hole in the filler recess.
The other thing which a few people have had is ignition coils going sick, they tend to start to go down when they heat up, which would fit in with your symptoms of being OK after cooling down for a while. Just a thought.

im planning to drain the carbs again, and remove the airbox so i can get some carb cleaner down in there, then a squirt with some high pressure air, before i do tho, will compressed air possibly damage the carb diaphrams?

sounds like a sticky float bole needle to me... float bole needle sticks and shuts off petrol or only partialy opens when bole is full then when you come to a stop it refills on stops sticking.. as its still runs but only to 8k then it might just be the one side.
try taping the carbs with the handle of a screwdriver.. then try again .. if its fine after that then it happens a wee while later then its most probably crap in the float bole or tank finding its way into the jets or needle only reason i know is i had the same symptom yeeeeeears ago... striped and cleaned carb boles and jets then put an in-line filter on the fuel supply pipe. |

Still could be your front spark plug... Once mine got flooded after riding in a heavy rain it didn't get better until cleaned the drain hole.
