Default Please help - '99 curvy will not start

Hi guys/gals,

Any assistance would be gratefully accepted. Let me tell you what has happened.

I was at a junction, behind two cars waiting to come onto a main road & as I crawled forward I stalled the bike. When I tried to restart, it would have none of it. The engine seemed to turn over once, but the battery would appear to be dead. At this point let me tell you that the battery is less than 12 months old.
I left it for a couple of minutes & tried again, but still nothing.

Fast forward now to getting picked up by a recovery vehicle & getting home. I put the bike away & tried one last time to get the bike to start. It did exactly the same again, but after it tried & failed to start, whilst the start button was still pressed the bike then made a fast, repetative clicking noise from the engine area - sorry I can not be more specific about where the noise came from, I just could not tell.

Would I be right in saying that this is a fault with the starter motor?
Or is it the alternator, rectifier regulator or something completely different?

Please let me know so I can get it to my local bike shop to get it fixed.
Many thanks, Alan

does it start with a booster on?if so battery is drained-then you will need to check out charging system.

I will be putting the battery on charge later today. Then i will try to start it again, but I dont think it is the battery.

When I got on the bike on Sunday morning the bike started 1st time. I went to a friends house & was there for a couple of hours. Got on the bike as I was leaving & it started 1st time again. Only when I had then been out on it for a couple of hours & I stalled it, did it not want to start.

i had a similar problem with mine. new battery didn't sort it.

turns out the battery wasn't charging. just dodgy connection/wiring. Had wiring sorted and now OK.

If you can get it started (push start or jump start) then whilst the engine is running use a multimeter to see if the battery is getting charge. Connect the leads to the battery terminals and rev the engine, if the voltage reading goes up then its not charging related, if it doesn't then its something to do with the charging circuit. could then be alternator, wiring or voltage regulator

I'm having the same problem, If you get it sorted can you advise me? I'll also advise if I get it sorted.

I'm currently going throught the testing procedure i.e. resistance across generator coil etc which all seems fine but the next test is load testing the generator but I need to get the bike started and keep it at 5000revs and see what load it's pulling. But I need to get eh battery on charge to get the bike going again.

I'm thinking of swapping the battery out for a new or borrowed one just to see.

Sorry I know not much help.

I'll try that when I get the bike started. A couple of months ago I tried that and it was okay then (the problem turned out to be a cylinder issue adn spark plug which is nwosorted), might have changed from then till now.

I think a call to my local friendly bike mechanic is in order. i trust him to be straight with me, so I am sure I will only pay for what is really needed.

Well it does sound like there is no juice in the battery (an obvious statement). I had a similar occurunce on my 1999 sv a couple of years back - reg/rec was fried and with my lights on, the battery drained. Stalled it, couldnt start on the button and my dad had to bump start the bike for me to get it home

Have you tried bump starting it? (2nd gear, roll down hill...stand up on pegs...then fall down as you let the clutch out, should burst into life although might be difficult if the bike is cold!)

Do you know if the reg/rec is the original one? or has it been changed before?

Sid Squid will know of a test you can do to check the chargin cuircuit, PM him

Matt
