Default What O-Ring grease (clutch cover- curvy)

Hi,

I'm finally getting round to putting my new clutch cover on this weekendy.

Mr Haynes says smear the o-ring in grease.

But which grease?!

Currently, indoors, I have multi purpose, silicone. copper and red rubber grease. Clearly, it ain't gonna be copper, m'lud.

Best guess is the multi purpose or silicone- is there a difference (I thought that silicone grease worked up to higher temperatures).

Cheers

I'd use a little silicone grease - put some on your fingers and run the o ring through them until it has a light coating - it will help it stick in the groove of the casing and stop it getting trapped - and also help it seal.

I use silicone grease, although it is the o-ring that makes the seal.

So- got my new clutch cover on yesterday. There were nobbles on the o-ring, which I assumed to be aligning nobbles, but could find nothing corresponding in the cover's groove. Have I missed something?

Did the bolts hand tight with a screwdriver head on the socket- I reckon I've done an ok job and there was no massive oil explosion on the A3 this morning! Though I did have a dream last night that it went pearshaped and made a mess of the bike. That worried, I was!

One more thing- while the cover was off, had a quick look at the state of the clutch- can't see much wear on the basket- where would this show?

I did think that the pressure plate didn't move very far when I pulled the lever in- probably about 50mm or less- how much should this move? It just didn't seem a lot at all. Could this be-

warped plates making the pressure plate sit higher than it should be?
something to do with the worm drive mechanism?
Any other suggestions? The clutch cable is just 1 year old (about 8-9k miles) and there is still a little adjust left in it (not much).

Just so I can have a reasonable idea, before my mechanic quotes me big figures (though I know I'm only taking a cursory inspection and he has to properly look at it to give me the estimate)

Cheers as ever

Notches. Not an SV clutch.

Pressure plate should not move 50mm, if the clutch is behaving fine then the only thing worth doing while in there is to double check that the clutch center nut is tight. It is held on with a lock washer but I have seen one that has backed off. Just a visual check is fine.

Cheers Chris- tbh, it was hard for me to see the sides of the arms on the basket. Guess I'll just leave it to my mech then.

Pressureplate- that should have read 5mm. A bad night's sleep has rendered my bonce a little.... slow today.

are those radial grooves in the basket? dont look too deep could you not tickle them out with a bit of sandpaper?
