Default Next problem? Fuel light and meter needles

Hi,

Just when I thought it was safe to get on the bike...

Halfway to work this morning, the fuel light started flashing erratically and the speedo and rev meter needles were dropping and then rising then dropping. Also, the odometer was not showing. This happened all the way to work and tended to stop at higher revs.

Is the bike trying to tell me something's wrong- with the electrics or ecu perhaps?

When I got to work, I switched the bike off, then started it again- it didn't happen. Which was a relief! But is something therefore on the way out?

I suppose, as it was fricking cold again last night/this morning and I didn't cover the bike (she was a b*gger to start!), some damp may have got in somewhere...

had the same on mine turned out to be the connection to the clocks was loose-fire the bike up and squeeze the loom connection and see if it happens again.

Loose battery connection perhaps.

Well- just rode home with the same thing. When I start the bike, the counters work fine and it shows the idle speed. As soon as I rev the bike, the dash cuts out at about 3krpm then it seems to keep restarting and cutting out, but stays on at around 8-9k revs.

Gave the loom a squeeze and saw no difference. All the lights are working OK and the indicator and neutral lights are OK on the dashboard.

Just spoke to the mechanic- suggested a faulty reg/rec (is the one that wasn't working then was, from previous posts), or that the cold has got to the dashboard.

Gonna stop by and he'll take a quick look tomorrow...

Well- it looks like it could be the reg/rec- i noticed that the lights were dimming this morning when I revved the bike.

Will stop by the mechanic to double check tonight.

Or a bad earth or a loose or corroded battery connection!

Corroded starter relay? Look to see if the tab of metal from the live on the relay to the 30 amp fuse is going or gone green. As you load the bike it load this point as your live connections run through there, clocks go mental as the corroded tab can't supply the required voltage.

The relay is on the right side behind the saddle shutter (black triangle), you can cross the connection from the live to the fuse or get a new relay, a new one is best as they can rot from the inside out.

Not forgetting of course that old chestnut of the "rubbed loom", alway a wise idea to check it around the headstock area.

Cheers Mark.
