My 01 curvy has let me down for the first time
![]() Since its getting colder and more damp, its been getting more difficult to start, this morning being the worst. Got it going and it got me to work, but when it came to coming home, its fired a few times but wouldnt run, then got to the point where it wouldnt even fire and just made a quick ticking noise while the ignition lights went dim. I think the battery (new when i bought the bike in May) has taken a hammering trying to start it. Can the sv be jump started from a car (1.1 litre punto), and does it just sound like the problem is damp/cold? cheers Darren |

Bump start is the quickest way to do it, saves having to wire things up.
Put the bike in say 3rd gear, and start pushing and "run forest run" the jump on and drop the clutch, dont stall or ull end up doing it again and again. you will have to be running in 3rd so maybe 2nd but its harder to push. |

Bumping the 650 is easy enough. I've had some right fun bumping a 900 monster in the wet in the past. I use 2nd gear for the SV, run, leap in the air and as your **** hits the seat drop the clutch and give it a little throttle. Job done.

Also helps to roll it back against compression before you pull the clutch in and start rolling forwards

Have you tried charging the battery on a trickle charger i.e. an optimate? Might be best to get the condition of the battery tested (i.e. its efficiency). Mine was tested the other day, its not very efficient (30 %) so I'm due a new one. What battery did you buy for your bike? When you start it up do you have the headlights on? My dad told me off for doing that, said it would kill my battery

I've always found it easier to bump the SV in first, weirdly. Done it a million times, in the end I jumpstarted it once or twice off a car and that's fine. Make sure it's not off like, a range rover, the punto will be fine.

A range rover battery will work fine.
Don't use one of the radio equipped lightweights with the 24v system though.

cheers guys.
Jump started it yesterday, took it for a run for an hour, been fine since. I'm getting an optimate as that seems the best bet, even though i'll be using the bike throughout the winter so it wont be left standing. i'll check the battery in terms of efficiency and voltage when running etc, as even though the dealer said it was new when i bought it, theres new and 'new' I've changed my 'starting procedure' now as well in terms of using the choke only and not the throttle. I didnt relish having to take the seat off to jump the battery in the p!ssing rain ![]() ![]() thanks again. ![]() |
