Question Curvy cam chain tensioner noise, solutions?

Hi all,

My curvy ('00) bike's done about 17000 miles and has started making the damn takkity takkity noise from the front cam chain tensioner.
I have removed and checked both of the tensioners and they've both got plenty of bounce in them and seem to lock out ok at different depths, as they should.

So i don't know which part of the tensioner is actually making the noise, but have been told that it's a well known and documented problem.

I've rang a Suzuki dealer and they want to charge me around £63 (each) for replacement units, but these are the original spec parts the same as what are already fitted, and i don't want the problem happening again in no time at that price!

After trailing t'internet, it has been said that the updated version of tensioner fitted to the pointy models (that is apparrently immune to the problem?) can be fitted to my curvy model, is this true?

I've also looked at the manual types, but i'm not sure how i would go about setting them up to the correct tension and keeping them there.

The bike runs fine and pulls good and strong, and i've checked the source of the noise with the good old screwdriver trick. I've also tried pouring oil down the top end of it (where the locking screw is), but that hasn't done owte.

I'd be grateful for any help and other remedies you knowlegeable folk could dispense to me, so thanks in advance.

Luke.

You want a set of cam tensioners from a k3 model, which has a ratchet as well as the spring and solves the problem.

So it's true then, pointy cam chain tensioners are a straight swap onto my bike?

I dont have to drill holes, chovel or change the internal sliders in any way?

I'm just making absolutely certain, as i don't think Suzuki will be very keen on giving money back if i get the wrong ones.

I'm not certain on the cam chain tensioner swap - ask sid squid or yorkie_chris; they are the masters of all SV related stuff.

Are you sure the tensioners have gone? SV's do like to make a good ticky tick noise between 4000 and 5000 rpm; this is usually alleviated by topping up oil or changing the oil all together, and lubricating the chain (although that could be coincidence since i lube chain and check/top up oil together)

Hope you get it sorted.

Matt

Yea i'm pretty sure that they're bust in some way, although they still seem to work.

There must be some play in them or something causing the noise, but as i say i couldn't detect anything wrong with them when i took them out.

There's a video on YouTube that demonstrates exactly what my bike is doing, the link is:

have a look and see what you think.

Thanks.

I´m pretty sure if you do a search on here, you will find this question has been answered before.

IIRC cam chain noise is a common thing on the SV, it was one of the first adjustments I made when I first brought mine.
