Was nasty this morning precisely because (round here at least) it didn't look icy just wet - last couple of days have been obvious with frost and snow sprinkles but today it looked to all intents and purposes like another wet day. Then I fell over on my path. And all the kids walking to school laughed. Barstewards.
On the way in, because there was the teensiest hint of fog, and visibility was down to about three nautical miles, everyone and their dog puts on their fog lights, their map lights, that little light under the sunvisor and the glovebox light just to make sure. And because even with all this they still couldn't see they figured following six inches off the backside of the bike in front would be the best strategy. Anyone know what happens to stopping distances in ice? Anyone? Anyone at all? Nope, apparently no one... And I bet they all got into work like they were Scott of Antartic battling through the treachorous conditions. With their heated seats. Barstewards... And then turning into the works car park everything goes all light and slippy and I end up riding about 50 yards into the adjacent builder's yard instead, and it turns out their yard is even slippier, and I get to look like a duck on a frozen pond paddling this bike round an ice rink ![]() |

The other day I was umming and arring about buying a small can of lock de-icer to keep on the bike for just this eventuality, but didn't as I worked out, that at home/work I can always put the metal bit of the key in boiling water for 2 seconds. If it ever froze away from them, when I've just used the bike (eg, petrol station) I could heat the key on the exhaust/engine.
Minimatt: RE, car drivers hanging of your 4rse in snow/ice. Yes, real nuisance. When you're focusing on keeping a bike shiny side up on ice the last thing you need is to be worrying about getting run over by the ***k 2 feet off your back tyre. |

Was very chilly round here, -2 in places which for east anglia is cold, was covered in ice by the time i finished my 22 mile comute & had to keep scraping the freezing fog of my visor, hands were toasy though thanks to some gloves my other half bought me, didn't even need to put the heated grips on, were still idiots in cages going far too fast for the conditions though & i saw three cars in two accidents just by the Orwell bridge causing chaos & tailbacks.
Roll on the two days of summer!!!! |

About a week ago I was working nights, short on fuel & my filler cap had frozen too.
Needed to get some de-icer anyway for the car, so no big deal. Still only took 5mins. ![]() |

I went out and nearly fell down in front of a car, as a pedestrian.
I feel like I'm slowly turning into my parents, opting to stay in when theres black ice. I also brought the car to work, because I was sick of being cold the rest of the week. Je suis ghey. |
