Default Xbox problem - any advice ?

Hi,

just got a new xbox elite, plugged it all in etc, updated the dash to the new version then went to copy my profile down from Microsoft. It finished and then could not get an IP address from my router (hard wired RJ-45).

ok, so got the old xbox, plugged in and fine. I then noticed the new one plugged in wouldn't bring up the connection light on the router to the ethernet port. old one would.

left the new one for an hour and it was fine, for 10 minutes then wouldn't work.

cheked the MTU on the router and updated the firmware, old xbox is fine (so is plugged in now), the new one is boxed up ready to go to bloody Germany to get fixed, I've got my shipping labels from Microsoft and need to call UPS tomorrow.

I was just wondering on the offchance if this has happened to anyone else ?? or someone knows what it might be other than a dodgy ethernet port on the xbox ?

Bit weird that it would allow you to do an update and then block you out afterwards , what router are you using ?

If it's less than 12 months old, just return it to where you bought it from, they should swap it for a new one no probs.

Well he did just say it was NEW , so yeah , but that`s not the point really is it , it allowed him to get on the Live Service to update but now won`t allow him to connect to his router .

its a netgear 834g router - it works fine right now with my old xbox.

the new one seems to stop after about 5-10 minutes.

Trouble with returning it is someone bought it for me from play.com so it's a right pain to return it, since i have 2 other xbox's in the house i dont mind waiting for MS but it's just a pain in the ****, was just wondering if someone had seen this before and / or it was a known issue on elite boxes.

Well I have an Elite as well and updated it a couple of weeks ago and not had that problem , I also had a Netgear DG834 and not had any issues with it . Could be just a knackered Ethernet port on the 360 , I trust you are doing the network test on the 360 and it is stopping at the IP part of the test then ?

I can`t remember if the 360 has an Ethernet port light on the back , the old style Xbox had one so you could actually see if it was talking to anything over Ethernet .

That would be a sensible first step. Does the ethernet card work in the 360? Could potentially be an issue with the upgrade screwing with device drivers and/or firmware on the ethernet card.

I don't have a 360, so can't comment on rolling the update back to rule this out unfortunately.

had a look and no lights at all on the back - gave the automated UPS number a call earlier and they're apparently coming out to collect it before 5pm.

i'm fairly convinced its something like an overheat after some usage stops the ethernet port.

oh well ! hopefully be fixed in 3 weeks
