Hi all, I currently rent a garage which is a couple of roads away from my house. This time of year it's dark by the time I get in & even in the day if its cloudy I cant see much at the back of the garage so I'm thinking of putting a few fluroescent lights in there, however there's no power to the garage.
Short of running a few extension leads plugged in together up the road I've come up with 3 possible options: a) Some sort of solar panel which I thinks is a no go - battery powered torch & all that, plus the locals kids are known to climb up onto the roofs sometimes, or it could get nicked. B) Wiring up a couple of car batteries. not sure bout toxic fumes from the acid? c) Getting a small generator, not sure what size (1kw?) or type though? At the mo I'm thinking C is the most likely. Just wondering If anyone has done anything similar or could offer any alternative ideas? Thanks in advance. |

Are you going to be working in there or is it just so that you can see to park your bike?

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm hoping to do a bit of spannering when I get home from work, so I'm thinking a couple of lights & a lead light.

Get a little genset, but do people live nearby as they can be a bit loud.

Got a cheap genny from b&q few years ago -used a few times when we had power cuts and even powers up a few power tools angle grinder etc if you are stuck away from mains electric- think it was about £40 and would easily run a floodlight

The garage does back onto peoples gardens so the genny will be about 30 meters from peoples houses.
Most of the ones that I've seen are about 95 db but there are some "silent" ones out there that are about 55 db. The cheapest one I've found was £78 but is only 650 watts. Cheers. |

650 watts is enough for running some lamps, and most tools. I've got a 680w one and I've even used an AC arc welder off it at low setting. Was a bit weird but worked alright.

I'd go for one of the silent gens. In fact I was going to but then I moved house and got a garage with a house attached

Cheers, I was looking at a couple of 110 volt site floodlights at 250 watts each so leaves a little bit spare, if I want a lead light to get in the nooks & crannies.
