Talking K6 Pointy GSXR Front End Mod

I had a bright idea, and thought I would share with you my completely unique modification that no one with an SV has ever done before. Ever.

I am replacing my front end with a GSXR600/750/1000 hybrid. The rear shock has also been replaced with a GSXR1000K4 unit.

Told ya it was original....

Anyway...thanks to Uber, Phil and Red Herring who have nicely answered my questions...and to a couple of others who have posted really useful info in other peoples threads. I am sure there will be more questions to come...

This all came about because I test rode an '05 R1 and absolutely loved it. In fact I very nearly bought it. I even got permission from my boss (aka the fiancee). The handling and brakes were excellent. The thing is that to get the same thrill I get from riding my SV I felt like I would have to break the law all the time - and I am quite fond of my licence!

So, I had a mooch around and came to the following decisions...

The SV is fast enough 0-60 for me, and that is where most of my riding is done.
Riding position is better for me than the current crop of SS600's. I could raise the bars but I don't need more power at the moment and...
...the SV sounds fantastic.
Insurance is unaffected and relatively cheap.
I get a 'rare' bike, but quite cool because only those 'in the know' would realise it was not standard. To the untrained eye I just ride an SV.

So...its mod time. I could have gone for new springs in the front, but I thought I would go down the more tarty route and grab myself some USD forks and 4-pots.

So without further ado....welcome to my WILMA-FRANKENBIKE thread...

First purchase...

A pair of GSXR600K4 forks and calipers, a replacement axel mount and a GSXR750K4 'banana-fork'

As you can see one of the 600 fork adjusters has been ground off. The 750 fork was given to me by the breakers because the adjuster is in perfect condition. The fork is so bent it won't even compress!

I was planning on having the forks serviced, so a strip down wasn't going to be an issue.

I took the forks to my local shop and just for kicks asked the mechanic if he could hammer the bent one straight. You have to do these things occasionally...

Next on the list were the yokes and clipons.

I saw a pair of TLS clipons on eBay for £26 plus shipping....EACH!!! Sod that. I found a pair for £30 delivered.

The yokes were from a GSXR1000K4. One of the lock stops was damaged, but after confirming the sellers claim that it is 'an easy repair' I bought them. Had the damage been more structural I would not have considered buying them at all.
The lockstop was repaired for £10. Total cost - £46 plus shipping.

GSXR1000K4 Shock. 1500 miles. Just a few storage marks.

The calipers were pretty scrotty, but a bit of water and Autogym soon got the grime off. They are a bit scratched but I have decided to live with them and tart them up over the winter if the marks are too noticable.

The clip-ons have been powder coated because I didn't want silver next to the black yokes.

Where I am at now...

Forks serviced. Oil and seals replaced where required. Broken axel mounting and adjuster replaced. The axel mount replacement is a story in itself. Never believe a breaker when he says "Its dead easy...just unscrew the old one and the new one will screw straight on." Yeah right...with the aid of a lathe chuck, some copper strips, a blow torch and a jack handle.

Calipers rebuilt and new pads fitted

Wheel delivered - GSXR600K4...dink free apart from the cack-handed tyre removal marks that won't show, and a slight scratch that is hidden by the discs.

GSXR750 spindle delivered. Clean apart from a slight touch of road rash which you can hardly see.

Hall sensor and magents delivered...two sets of magnets cus the first set were too deep.

Discs delivered. Not great but they will do and the price was OK. I have checked them for warp and thickness and they are within spec.

Fender, Goodridge braided hoses (stainless fittings), head bearings arrived

Waiting for disc bolts and I need to order some fender bolts...

I have fitted everything loosely to see what screws / bolts / widgets I am missing. Note the very tasty M8 hex head bolts I used to line up the discs...

Still got a few things to sort out - mainly to do with mounting the speed sensor - but I think everything is in hand.

It looks like the weekend of July 12/13 will be D-day for Wilma.
