I would like to beef up the engine a bit, but I'm not a mechanic
![]() But at the moment I don't even know where to start. Big bore kit? Lighter internals? I don't know what the best way to go is. But I don't want to go one route and reach a dead end in terms of upgrades. I'd like to do one mod, see how it feels, then be able to progress if I choose to. Is that sort of approach possible? Also I want the engine to stay reliable as I do a fair bit of touring so don't want to be worrying about it blowing up. So what do you recommend? Is it too risky for an amateur like me to be messing with? Would I be better to take the bike to a garage that knows what they are doing? |

Sensible answer?Dont do it.Cost you a lot of money to get meaningful extra power which would be much better spent buying a more powerful bike outright.

I've already spent stupid money on it, but that doesn't bother me for some reason. I love my bike |

OK.You can get a big bore kit but the weakness is the crank,so you need that beefing up.Add on a good exhaust, air filter and some dyno time and Im told 85 BHP is attainable.Money has to be no object though-------

It`s not worth it unless you want to go racing and have deep pockets . JHS racing would be a good start though if you were determined enough .

a cheap start would be drop a tooth on front sprocket and R6 throttle.
not exactly engine mods, but bothe improve the bike IMO |

i do believe a 750 mod was £2k and people mention it's not worth going for as for 2k you can get something with more CC's.

We had JHS cams put in. Around 500 quid. Dynoed at 74, but the carbs were knackered so there would have been a bit more. But after a couple of months we bought the 996. Wish we had saved the cam money TBH.

PCIII for a start. If you do go down the serious work on the top end route you will need one anyway.
Not used one on the 650, but on other bike........... You will notice a difference in throttle response right away on a standard bike with the correct map loaded at purchase. So much better. It supposedly gives better consumption (yawn). Never noticed. It probably adds a couple of bhp through the range. Fills in the emissions dip. If you take it to a good dyno place (http://www.dynojet.co.uk/tuningcentres-detail.php?id=59 ) you will end up with an even more healthy bike. Bottom , middle and top. It is plug in and play. Doddle to fit. You mucked about with your gearing? £20 for a larger rear sprocket. Another doddle to fit. |

I heard the PCIII was a waste of time on a SV650
