Default Fishing

Any fishermen in the North West? The rod variety, not boats, or captains that lure in small children a la;

Fancy doing a bit this summer. But as I've only used spinners off boats, I'm clueless as to what's the deal around here in Manchester.
For example, what type of fishing is worth doing (with little equipment set up), what places there are, basic kit, and any rules I should know.
