Bike failed MOT today because of the exhaust, plus 2 other little bits. It's a renegade race can, which says "Competition use only" on it but has been mostly dremeled out, although can just still be seen. I bought a baffle off ebay for it which i put in but it was still pretty loud, although i thought i'd risk it hoping that they'd be understanding and after all it did have a baffle in. No such luck sadly.
They said the packing in the exhaust needed changing and then it would quiet down with the baffle in, and a sticker could be put over the comp use only bit. So i've bought some packing and got it off the bike, but can't get one of the bolts (it's not riveted) off it. It's an allen head which has rounded, and i've tried getting some heat on it with a blow torch but doesn't help and the packing starts smoking. So basically need MOT asap, i'm a student here so don't have a drill to drill it. I'd like to get it passed and then sort it out when i'm at home. So does anyone have a can i can lend to pass it? Another question, does the exhaust packing actually matter to the performance/efficiency/whatever of the bike or does it just cut down noise? Thanks guys, benj |

put some tape over the competition use bit they cant remove it but they may decide it is too loud or not as you have a baffle
*EDIT* I should of read what you posted more thoroughly *Doh* |

Might be an idea to tell us where you are located, somebody local may be able to help you out...

you just need to change your tester, not your can.
There are no noise measurements made in an MOT, it is a simple subjective assessment. if too loud my tester would probably turn down the volume on his earing aid. put some tape over the stamping and go to a decent garage

Did your MOT centre do a DB checker with a machine or something, cause how could he have known how loud it was by ear if not.
Gah find another centre. Most don't bother with noisy cans, they may say 'you might want to change it when you get home', but, most are more concerned with real safety issues. 'not for road use' has been passed for all my MOTs on one of my bikes

the actual tester told me he wouldn't/couldn't. going to another tester is all very well if someone can recommend one who will be nice to me, you can't just rock up and ask if it'll pass though because they'll say no because they can't be too blatant about it.
and as per the title i'm in leamington. what i really need is someone to lend me one for an hour just so i can get it passed. i've been riding it since august and haven't been pulled once. if someone could lend me a drill that would also be handy - just to get the head off the bolt. easiest would be just to borrow one from someone in cov/leamington/surrounding area though. |

Actually the "not true" is not true.
![]() I'm an MOT tester, we are not allowed to remove anything from a vehicle. We can only check what is visable at the time of the test. For example: A car is presented for test, it is fitted with Hub-Caps. Making sure that the vehicles' wheels are securely attatched is part of the test. But we CANNOT remove the Hub-Caps to check presence of ALL the wheel bolts/nuts. Therefore they are no-longer a testable item on THAT particular vehicle as they cannot actually be tested. So there you go. |

If its a pointy, I have a standard exhaust you can have for free. Its only done 300 miles and is pretty much brand new.
