Default Car stereo help

Was hoping that someone might be able to assist here.

Tried installing a Kenwood stereo which I've bought off Ebay, into my Focus.
Bought the correct lead, and ive hooked it up to the unit. Turned it on and found that I needed to press the reset button to get it started. All was well, put in a few radio stations messed with the EQ etc. and then turned it off again at the ignition.

Turned it back on again 30 secs later and its not working. Again press the reset button and it starts but of course Ive lost all the settings. Tried this about 4 or 5 times and it did it everytime.

Swapped the power cables around (permanent & 12v) and it starts up every time however clears the memory every time so it seems to suggest to me that it was right the first time around however doesnt want to work that way?

Can anyone give any advice on it? Anyone had a similar problem or am I installing wrongly?

I see you swapped the cables round? so at the back of the head unit, yellow goes to red at autolead kit and back of headunit red goes to yellow autolead kit? if that makes sense? as far as im aware that should work, check auto leads kit all secure clean etc are you trying it with the headunit out or in the dash as could be breaking the connection. I had similar problem just did the above cable swap and made sure it was like below diagram

My diagram
Key :-
- = Wire
| = Plug
Red = Red wire
Green = Yellow wire (yellow dont show up too well)

Head ---|--- Auto
Unit ---|--- Leads

Yup, thats probably it.

There is a permanent live and a switched live in the loom to the headunit.

If these are swapped the settings are lost on power down.

These are red and yellow wires - I am not certain but I think the red is switched and yellow is permanent. PLEASE CHECK THIS!!!!

My mate once wired his car radio up to the internal light. He spent ages trying to work out that when he got in the car, the radio went off! I laughed!

AS said, swap the red and yellow wires over to the opposite they are.
