Default handlebars on the cheap? compatibility questions

A while back I put down my 07 sv650 non-faired and have fixed everything but the handlebars. Im going to be selling it so I want to get some straight bars on it. I wouldn't mind some aftermarket bars if I could get them for cheap, but how can I tell if a universal bar would fit? Also I found a bar from the previous generation for pretty cheap (60 bucks shipped) what bars are swappable between years?

Thanks!

Hi,

Firstly, welcome to the forum!!

If you want bars, you'll probably be best getting Renthal ones, there's a UK shop selling them here (with decent measurements). About the closest to stock is the "Low" ones IIRC (model number 754-01-... then add the letter for the colour you want - 754-01-S actually look better on a 2003 bike than the standard bars IMO!).

As for fitting them, if you're confident with a screwdriver & spanner, it'll take about an hour. Note that the left grip is glued on, and you'll need to remove it to get the clutch lever off easily. Also the stock bar-ends won't fit, so you'll need to replace these.

When fitting, be careful to check lock-lock once switch-gear is on the bars before you tighten up the clamps.

Thanks for the welcome!

im across the ocean (yank) so i am guessing shipping would be pretty steep on these (although the price is cheap)

not worried about getting the bars on just making sure i have ones that will fit :^p

what about the stock bars from earlier models? are they the same as my sv?

I guessed you were American (the reference to "bucks" gave you away ). That's why I specified that the site I linked was a UK retailler.

I've had a look through the parts fische's for you, but the earliest non-faired (SV650N) fische I can find at the moment is the K6. So I can't talk with any certainty about previous years.

The K6 bars have an OEM part number of 56111-17G10, and cost $79.84 USD (without shipping & handling). Although there may be cheaper ones on ebay etc.

For fitting, the main thing you need, is that the diameter of the bars is 22mm. Get that right, and the clamps on the top yoke and all switch-gear will mount fine. The switch gear will need a small hole drilling in the right place (if you don't buy OEM ones) for them to sit in. Bandit Mania (the site I linked before) offer pre-drilling for £3 GBP on the Renthal bars.

Other than the diameter of the bars, everything else is down to personal preference. It's probably a good idea to get a tape measure on your current bars to get measurements off them so you can compare them to the diagram on Bandit Mania.

You might be better finding somewhere more local that stock bars (Renthals or otherwise) to save on shipping, but I've really no idea how much shipping would be.

I recently fitted some Low Renthal bars (from Bandit Mania - with pre-drilling) to a K3, and it was completely hassle free.

HTH.

Just to go off the subject a tad... what's that about drilling holes for switch gear and stuff? I don't understand what this means (not drilling obv.)?

The kill switch housing has a small plastic tab on the inside of it. The headlight dip housing also has a plastic tab on the inside of it.

These plastic tabs need to sit in small holes (4mm??) to prevent the switch gear housing sliding up & down the bars.

balls to that I was gonna do it but then I found the lazy way*, snap off the crappy little lug in the switchgear housing (it'll happen at some point anyway if it hasn't already) wrap the bars with insu. tape where the switchgear will be placed then attach the switchgear mine's never budged.

*all credit YC

That's only really applicable if you buy bars that aren't drilled. OEM ones are, Renthals can be pre-drilled by most retaillers. £3 isn't that much, and I'd rather that than snap the tabs.

Also, I fail to see how the tabs will snap in normal usage. The whole switchgear would crack before the tabs go, as they're far from load bearing parts.
