Hello
Yesterday I lost all electrical power to my naked SV650 99. The story starts last week when I came home from work and could smell an eggy smell - I've heard this can be where a rectifier is faulty and over charges the battery and nukes other components. I took her out yesterday and the first 20 miles was fine, then disaster - all power just disappeared, I looked at the tacho and saw the needle had dropped below the 0 pin marker!!. Thinking this must be bad, I changed down gear but at that point the engine completely died. On closer inspection. The head light bulb has blown. Eventually the odo meter comes into life but as soon as you switch a light (indicator or headlight) it blows. The battery also seems nuked as it wouldn't turn over (even with a full charge on the reading) but would at least try to turn over with the breakdown chap's mobile starting unit. I've checked all the fuses and they are in good order. I have a feeling this is the rectifier at fault but I am also concerned that something else has caused it - here is my reasoning - this is rectifier number 3 and even with those replacements, when you switch on the lights the charge rate drops with increasing revs (when the bike was working anyway). Perhaps a faulty earth on the lighting loom? Any suggestions on how to tackle all these issues would be grateful. The breakdown chaps assessment was fairly grim hinting it may be time for my sv to join the scrap heap in the sky! one final thing is that the bike is an import - the breakdwon chap mentioned that this may require a different rectifier/regulator that the GB ones? cheers Last edited by philbert; 26-05-09 at 09:53 AM. |

Hi - I don't know anything about eggy smells but have had a similar cutting out problem and clocks going stupid.
Mine was caused by the regulator playing silly bu%%rs and not charging the battery. There comes a time (sooner if you run with the lights on) where the ain't enough juice for the bike to run. My breakdown guy cleaned all the contacts from the regulator and jump started her. Mine now has a Kawasaki regulator fitted so we'll see how long that lasts? PLUS I fitted a battery supply monitor which is a clever LED that goes red if the regulator plays up. This one http://www.aoservices.co.uk/data/bsm.htm As far as the reason for regulators failing on the SV - consider it to be a feature to keep you on you toes. Do a search on here for regulators and Sid Squid who is the accepted authority on such mattres Good luck Last edited by Tris; 26-05-09 at 11:55 AM. |

What type of SV is it mate. If it's a curvy 99-02 sounds like the same problem I was having.
Check the connection to the starter relay behind the right hand side panel under the seat. Give the wire a wiggle and see if everything turns back on. (Starter relay is under that little green cover) Mine had a loose wire going into the plug which caused my bike to die at random times. I solved it quick fix style by finding a point where the wire was connected and strapped it all up. |

The start relay has a 30amp fuse and this is supplied by a little bit of metal that goes a nice green and breaks down. Make sure it all looks OK.
What sort of charge rates you getting at 5k with the lights on and off. |

Cheers for the replies. Mine is a naked 99 SV import.
Will check the links out. Before the last reg went it was running at about 13.2 with the lights off and about 11 ish with them on ![]() |
