Default Is your bike really your bike?

This article was on the local news website....is this where your stolen bike has been stripped and resold on another legitimate frame.....read on

http://www.hillingdontimes.co.uk/new...ly_your_bike_/

Shame there is no more information about the shop in question.

I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of the secondhand parts sold on Ebay don't come from stolen bikes. I think that we're all guilty of over-looking this possibility as we're getting a bargain.

Dunno what the law is like for chopped bikes like the ones in the article but you have no legal rights if you buy a stolen bike - it gets repatriated and you don't get any money back.

Basically, this is why selling a frame with V5 should be illegal.

Tea leafs simply buy a frame+V5, nick a bike of same model and transplant all parts except frame. Sort paperwork to deal with "change of" engine number and away you go - new bike for price of a frame (and some build time).

It's also why I am cautious looking at a bike with different engine and frame numbers when the OEM was the same. Not always a definite walk away, I just look much harder for the explanation.
