Default MotoGP - in 3-D.

http://www.motogp.com/en/news/2009/M...s+future+in+3D

This could be awesome! I went to a preview of some finished Avatar shots in stereo yesterday and the 3D-ness has gone so far beyond the whole red/blue glasses thing. I always thought it would stay in the realms of motion picture cinema, but watching something motoGP would be amazing!

Sounds excellent! Presumably you still need glasses or something? So you'd need to buy something extra for home viewing (of the 3D MotoGP)?

Ive heard about these new 3D systems. How do they work? Would you still need glasses?

there are diffrent ways, but the common ways are polorised glasses, each eye diffrent and so each sees a diffrent pic but this can be lower res, this only realy works in cinemas

the other way is special glasses that can can do somthing called blanking/shuttering, they need a sync signal from the screen.

both ways above give full color 3d

the otherways give the red/green 3d

look here for more info

There's an interesting demo I saw with a Wii that may or may not be able to be applied to this...

Basically someone had taken a Wii controller and created a demo that on screen showed some sticks pointing towards you (as though you were looking directly down on some tree trunks, for example). As you moved the controller around, the picture changed, so if you moved to the left, you would see the left of the sticks. It actually made it incredibly realistic I thought! And this was watching a demo on Youtube IIRC

If I can find it I'll post it....I can't think how you would make it apply to real-life footage though, unfortunately (not without some incredible technology anyway).

Have none of you been to an IMAX cinema yet? The 3D is not just 3D visuals, its also 3D sound and is absolutely stunning.
And yes you wear glasses but they are simple grey on both eyes (as TSM said its a polarising effect frm the lenses) and the "depth" of the 3D layers was just astonishing to me.

Me who as a kid got to see some of the first batch of red/green 3D films that were so rubbish they would have been laughable....had it not been for the headaches and excrutiaing eye pains of course.

If you aint seen an imax 3D, go see one and be very , very impressed.

Its called head tracking, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw.

Its a very interesting way of using the wii mote and could be extremely fun in games. However it will not work for films etc because the game itself is a 3D engine unlike TV. This is at least my limited understanding of headtracking.

Yeah, unless the technology was insane - and they could track the live camera around the track, etc? Perhaps through some form of interpolation with multiple cameras around the track? Who knows!

This was the type we used.

It doesn't have to be imax - just a digital projector. It is been around for a bit but I think has been expensive, but with the advent of camera's like the one in the article, it's becoming way more viable.... and it looks f***ing cool!
