Default Rebuilding rear brake caliper - No red rubber grease

Hi

I have got all the parts for my rebuild on my rear brake but I cant find any red rubber grease.

What can I use instead? Suzuki told me that I could use brake fluid on my pistons, does that sound right to you?

I use my bike for work everyday (incl winter) and I wanted to do it right. Is it better to wait and get some over the net next week? Can I use LM grease? or something similar.

Thanks

for an everyday used bike, I'd wait and get th proper grease, although you can get away with just using clean brake fluid, it will cut down the interval until it needs doing again.

you don't have your location in you profile, so I'm unaware of it, but I'm sure others like me have a reasonable suppy of the stuff (500mg tin) which would last for years, so you may be able to pinch a little (you only need a very small amount) if you ask

Cheers Mark.

I wouldn't use brake fluid, it's worse than nothing as it forms some crystalline s*** when exposed to water and salt.

If you need the bike on monday then put it in dry (ohh goddd), and do it again we you've had chance to get some grease.

I was advised by the Castrol Helpline that anything vegetable based would do, as a joke i said i got some Olve Oil in the kitchen thinking he'd tell me off, instead he said "Well if you want to be posh about it sir, yes thats perfect. Myself i'd use chip fat, unused of course"
he was actually serious and gave me his name an job title to prove he wasn't just yanking my chain. He also said try ebay and he was searching ebay as we spoke on the phone. "just be carefull what you searcg for sir as simplye putting in 'red rubber' brings up some suprising results....none of which can be used for your brake seals but some are worth looking at just for fun"

So, in all seriousness i now use simple sunflower cooking oil on my piston seals and i've never had a problem.
