not really normal, no. The engines are generally considered bullet proof. I suppose you may have had a component that was just a bit duff...laws of averages say there'll be a few bits out there that are not up to standard.
Has the engine been used hard all its life? |

What year bike have you got? You cant tell just by looking at a bike if its thrashed or not, you just need to know. At 80 mph, assuming your in top gear, the engine isnt under much stress, revs are about 6000 rpm. So it must just be bad luck

Ah, ok, well no its not a common problem for that model. It is somewhat documented that the 2003 SV650's had a tendancy to have crankshaft faliure I think, but it only occured in track bikes or very hard-used road bikes. I think you can fit any engine from 2004 onwards, they are all pretty much the same, except the 2008 and 2009 engines have two spark plugs per cylinder instead of one. Is it not possible to repair the engine? mind you, that might be alot of hassle!

Fit any K3-K7
Nah the K3 problems were few and far between, and fairly random.

In which case, I stand corrected. I read in a few places it was only those bikes that were used hard. Maybe, in the interests of reliability, get a K4 onwards

No, a curvy. If you know what you're doing with them and aren't a mechanical mongchild then they're fine.

there are few 03-06 motors that snapped rod on half in race condition.
99-02 or 07-up rods are stronger. |
