Its regarding the "Do I keep my bike and return again next year", although I'd say I am an all weather rider, as I learnt in the Winter and enjoyed riding!
I'd like a second opinion, so the circumstance. I want to keep my bike as tidy and clean as possible, as when I bought it, it was in great nick. However I recently passed my cage test, and am going to uni in September, however will be living at home and commuting via the train. The bike will only probably be used on odd Sunday's, and maybe not even. My parents have now said they'll pay for my insurance on my mum's car ('95), but in the winter the bike would have to leave the garage and mum's car would have to go in there and its not a fan of winter weather. I don't know if a cover will protect it well enough during the winter, i.e: corrosion. So my first question is, do I sell my bike to an owner who will keep it in its current condition rather than it depreciate and rust in the garden and wait till after uni? .. From this I'd hope to buy another bike next year, Feb - April time, not sure what but I wouldn't have established a years no claims so I'd have fallen short on that and still be having to pay the no NCB premium so whatever I got would be nothing spec-tac-u-larr. So second question is, sell my bike and buy another one next year before / at the start of spring? Third option would be, sell the SV, buy something cheap, with a bit of life left in it, already under 33bhp so i don't have to fanny with a restrictor and don't overlly get done over with insurance. Just something as a run around and knock about for odd weekends which can rust or whatever in the garden and I wouldn't be too fussed. Fourthly, magic up some money to rent a garage for a few months during the winter? Or finally, man up and just let the bike get a bit rusty in the garden? I can afford to keep the bike, throughout the winter it'll hardly cost me as it won't be ridden much, MOT will be sorted this week and tax is fine for another year. I can try to work on the persuasion of keeping the bike in the garage but I have little hope. I ask as I am actually not sure at all myself, I don't know if the bike will get the use I'd like it to at uni, however I can't find that out till I start and get my time table! |

I keep my bike under cover 365 days a year and its fine. The only thing I would suggest is ACF- 50 as TazDaz said. Its the one thing I havent done and some fittings have rusted a bit. Nothing major and certainly nothing that a little rub down doesnt sort out in the Spring when I give it a good check over. Spray ot over with that, then get a good all weather cover and it will be fine

Also there are very good ways to store a bike outside without any degradation at all. Rictus is your man to speak to on that.

Why not live in Uni halls in the first place, far much more fun and besides get away from olds? Then keep the bike there.
If your not using in the winter won't the bike fit in the back of garage and put the car in front of it? Or just store in the back yard? |

I'm staying at home, my loans don't cover the accomodation and no help from home.
I think that'll be the plan. Quote:

But overall its just more financially viable for me to stay at home as my course is only 13 hours a week and I live 25minute drive / ride. I have a fair few friends going to the same uni, but will be staying second year and for the other 2 as I'll have collected enough pennies. |
