I had one I think, but I couldn't get it to work with my printer. Check the compatability with yours before buying.

It might have just been my techno numptyness but I gave up in frustation

We've run a few machines off them in the worst case scenarios and they do seem to work ok running off various machines, printers etc..

Not used it with external HD, but can't see it being an issue.

Netgear WS606 that I could loan you in a week or two once I move a server.

Bought one of these on a whim, then brought it back (unopened) when I read the reviews that said it was exceptionally slow - no good for me when I was hoping to use it to transform an external HDD into a NAS ie. use a hard drive on a network.

For printer sharing across a network I've never had a whole lot of joy with printers that only have a USB interface. Seems pot luck, either they work or they dont'. If the printer has an "old" parallel port interface then hooking it up to an old HP JetDirect external box (must be pennies on ebay, every IT bod seems to have a few of them in a drawer someplace) works just about every time though.

Linksys do (or did) a net attached storage thingy nicknamed "the slug" - I'll try and dig out the product code for it - that was widely loved by geekdom as the onboard controller could be flashed to make a decent server in the palm of your hand type thingie.
