Off out to hopefully buy a SV. Anything specific to look out for?

Off out shortly to look at a few SVs and hopefully buy one. Apart from the usual things to check on a bike is there anything "iffy" on SVs to specifically look out for?

Are cam chain tensioners obviously rattly? One of the SVs I'm looking at is an early one (T reg), should it have had the CCT replaced or is it something thats common to all models not just early ones?

Never pay the asking price.Its a buyers market and summer is over.Buy with your head not your heart,and remember there are plenty out there.Check tyres brakes chains and sprockets,and use any shortcomings you find to get the price down.

By the time you have taken a critical look they will pay you to take it away.

My 1999 T reg SV has 39,000 miles, no CCT issues. Ask the seller to start the engine, let it warm up and then carefully rev it (slowly, no blipping) to about 5,000 rpm. if there is a CCT issue, you'll hear that characteristic ticking very easily.

Again, on the early ones, ask about the regulator / rectifier. If its never been changed, then you *could* haggle some money off, as they are a known issue. Check things like fork seals, turn the handlebars to check the operation is smooth lock-to-lock, check how smooth the clutch operation is (if itsa bit sort of notchy, then it might need a new cable), check the fluid levels aswell - Some SV's are known to use a bit of oil, so if its running very low, then maybe dont take that engine...an owner who cant be bothered to check his/her eninge oil might not check anything else!

I didn't get to go anywhere in the end as my daughter isn't well and I had to look after her. So i've wasted the day watching Hannah Montana! I'm trying to view a naked one first as I really want a nake done. But I need another bike by the end of the week. So if the naked one doesn't work out i'll call you and arrange to come and see it.
